It\u2019s in your shakes, it\u2019s in your pancakes and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/food-and-drink\/protein-drink-fiber-sources-diet-healthy-b2753889.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">popcorn<\/a>. Heck, it\u2019s even in your mac and cheese.<\/p>\n<p>Most Americans were <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/protein-is-important-but-were-eating-too-much-experts-say\/#:~:text=According%20to%20experts%2C%20people%20are%20likely%20eating,is%20about%2020%25%20more%20than%20is%20recommended.\">already getting more than enough protein<\/a> in their daily diet before the craze, according to experts. It just may not all be the best kind. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile meat provides high-quality protein, some meats also provide unhealthy amounts of saturated fats and sodium,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/diet-and-nutrition\/high-protein-foods-the-best-protein-sources-to-include-in-a-healthy-diet\">Harvard Health says<\/a>. \u201cIf you eat meat, it&#8217;s important to choose leaner meats and poultry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Protein has garnered new interest as political figures push Americans to eat more. Kennedy, Jr., called the \u201cwar on protein.\u201d Two-thirds of Americans\u2019 daily protein already comes from meat, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/publichealth.jhu.edu\/2026\/americas-protein-obsession-explained\">Johns Hopkins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe food system itself shapes our choices,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/us3.campaign-archive.com\/?u=0a43ad874dbe00d8f0545cfef&amp;id=7631a8ab64\">Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health dietician Daphene Altema-Johnson said<\/a> this week, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/swift-beef-company-strike-colorado-jbs-b2939261.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cultural messaging that emphasizes meat<\/a>, convenience and cost. <\/p>\n<p>But eating more red meat has been tied to an increased risk of heart disease: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/heart-disease\/data-research\/facts-stats\/index.html\">one of America\u2019s top killers<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>While Americans are consuming enough protein &#8211; the recommended amount is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/diet-and-nutrition\/high-protein-foods-the-best-protein-sources-to-include-in-a-healthy-diet\">0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight<\/a>, or between 10-35 percent of your daily calories, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/umc.edu\/news\/CONSULT\/2025\/September\/CON009012025B.html?fbclid=IwY2xjawQqLXFleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFINXcwak9TeUVuVjVMb1JPc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHq-d3d1CLaJcel_mh-CLOq8qZ93xMlaYvs-UkNrGGyOvXPBSyXeiqvXPoTf-_aem_v7ExvWRzEhHfsQZ9CROwDw\">the University of Mississippi Medical Center<\/a> &#8211; they\u2019re not getting enough fiber and other crucial nutrients found in sources of lean protein, such as a chicken breast. <\/p>\n<p>Fiber is good for digestive health and weight management. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/GettyImages-2255260429.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"New federal dietary guidance places a renewed emphasis on red meat. Peanuts, which are technically a legume, have more than 37 grams of protein per cup, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/encyclopedia\/content?contenttypeid=76&amp;contentid=16087-1\">Rochester Medicine<\/a> says, as well as more than 12 grams of fiber.<\/p>\n<p>A cup of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/encyclopedia\/content?contenttypeid=76&amp;contentid=12061-4\">almonds<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/encyclopedia\/content?contenttypeid=76&amp;contentid=12151-1\">pistachios<\/a> have around 30 and 25 grams of protein per cup, respectively, and pistachios have the same amount of fiber as peanuts.<\/p>\n<p>A cup of cooked soybeans, the beans with the highest amount of protein, have 28.62 grams of protein and 10.32 grams of fiber, according to Rochester Medicine.
