The two-time Tour winner talked about his form and his plan to race the Giro d’Italia \u2013\u00a0which he says has nothing to do with Poga\u010dar \u2013 in an interview from the Volta a Catalunya.<\/p>\n

Jonas Vingegaard is better than ever, and his decision to race the Giro d’Italia is not an admission of Tour de France defeat to Tadej Poga\u010dar. Those are two of the big takeaways from a sitdown the Visma-Lease a Bike star had with journalists ahead of the Volta a Catalunya.<\/p>\n

“It is true that my numbers are better. I think my general form is better at the moment than last year,” Vingegaard told the media as reported Tuesday in Wielerflits<\/a>. “It\u2019s not that I can pinpoint one specific area where I am better. I think I am generally performing at a higher level.”<\/p>\n

Those comments may come as little surprise to anyone who saw Vingegaard dominate the field at Paris-Nice, though the start list at that race did not include many of the top stage racers in the sport. Catalunya could be different; as Vingegaard acknowledged, “The competition here is indeed tough.”<\/p>\n

The presence of riders like Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe’s duo of Remco Evenepoel and Florian Lipowitz, both of whom have finished on the Tour de France podium alongside Vingegaard, as well as Milan-San Remo runner-up Tom Pidcock (Pinarello-Q36.5) and Jo\u00e3o Almeida (UAE Team Emirates XRG) will make Vingegaard’s pursuit of the overall win in Catalunya a significantly greater challenge. After all, even a better Vingegaard than ever must contend with the fact that the level of the wider peloton appears to get higher and higher all the time as well.<\/p>\n
