{"id":493863,"date":"2026-03-25T04:57:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T04:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/493863\/"},"modified":"2026-03-25T04:57:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T04:57:10","slug":"birmingham-council-leader-loses-confidence-vote-in-pre-election-blow-for-labour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/493863\/","title":{"rendered":"Birmingham Council leader loses confidence vote in pre-election blow for Labour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Birmingham City Council leader John Cotton tonight lost a vote of confidence brought against him by a collective of opposition councillors in a pre-election blow for the ruling Labour group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The authority&#8217;s Conservatives took the opportunity to land the symbolic blow at the last full council meeting before local elections on May 7.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/conservative-party\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Tories<\/a> were backed up by the Lib Dems, Greens and Independent groups to outnumber the ruling group by two votes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">READ MORE:<a aria-label=\" Exclusive shock poll predicts local elections &#039;wipeout&#039; for Labour in BirminghamLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/news\/midlands-news\/exclusive-shock-poll-predicts-local-33565940\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\"> Exclusive shock poll predicts local elections &#8216;wipeout&#8217; for Labour in Birmingham<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It was a gesture that demonstrated how diminished the Labour group has become as a result of defections and resignations, after once commanding a huge majority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Only 36 Labour members were in the council chamber for the meeting, out of 52, and were defeated by a collective opposition of 38 members out of 47.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Conservatives put in the no confidence vote in a last-minute amendment after a debate targeting the Labour group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">They had the final say after a subdued six-hour meeting which saw councillors debate a range of issues from climate change to transgender issues, equal pay to food waste.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Tory motion stated that Labour had &#8216;broken <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Birmingham<\/a>&#8216; through years of financial mismanagement, service collapse and broken promises. They inherited a thriving city from the last Conservative-led Administration, which had been voted the cleanest city in Britain, and are leaving it broken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;This was not just a vote of no confidence in one man; it was a vote of no confidence in 14 years of Labour failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Coun Matt Bennett, Cons, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/edgbaston\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Edgbaston<\/a>, revealed the last-minute amendment just as the final debate of the lengthy meeting got underway. He spied the opportunity to deliver the symbolic blow, with several Labour members absent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe brought this motion because enough is enough. Birmingham deserves better than chaos and cover-ups.
