Credit: Getty<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI has launched a large language model (LLM) that lives up to the company\u2019s name. Known as gpt-oss, it is the first \u2018reasoning\u2019 artificial intelligence (AI) from the firm that is open-weight, meaning that researchers will be able to download it and customize it.<\/p>\n<p>The firm, based in San Francisco, California, detailed the system in a <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/openai.com\/index\/introducing-gpt-oss__;!!NLFGqXoFfo8MMQ!u9u_jIlHdZnMbVXNSoK587GYxdr16-yODgoUdsBfHlINNbFYXQ7nVdOtyukmAsZb4dI3Bs6h0mYJ2M7j-bWZoFE$\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/openai.com\/index\/introducing-gpt-oss__;!!NLFGqXoFfo8MMQ!u9u_jIlHdZnMbVXNSoK587GYxdr16-yODgoUdsBfHlINNbFYXQ7nVdOtyukmAsZb4dI3Bs6h0mYJ2M7j-bWZoFE$\" data-track-category=\"body text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blog post<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__http:\/openai.com\/index\/gpt-oss-model-card__;!!NLFGqXoFfo8MMQ!u9u_jIlHdZnMbVXNSoK587GYxdr16-yODgoUdsBfHlINNbFYXQ7nVdOtyukmAsZb4dI3Bs6h0mYJ2M7jDhW-ptc$\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__http:\/openai.com\/index\/gpt-oss-model-card__;!!NLFGqXoFfo8MMQ!u9u_jIlHdZnMbVXNSoK587GYxdr16-yODgoUdsBfHlINNbFYXQ7nVdOtyukmAsZb4dI3Bs6h0mYJ2M7jDhW-ptc$\" data-track-category=\"body text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">technical description<\/a> on 5 August. On some tasks, gpt-oss performs almost as well as the firm\u2019s most advanced models. The LLM is available in two sizes, both of which can be run locally and offline \u2014 the smaller of them on a single laptop \u2014 rather than requiring cloud computing or an online interface. This means they can be used to analyse \u2014 or be trained further on \u2014 sensitive data that can\u2019t be transferred outside a given network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m very excited,\u201d says Simon Frieder, a mathematician and computer scientist at the University of Oxford, UK. \u201cThe competition between open-source large language models is already strong, and this will make the competition even fiercer, which benefits the entire research community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The release of gpt-oss comes at a time when powerful open-weight models from Chinese firms, such as Hangzhou-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-00229-6\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-00229-6\" data-track-category=\"body text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DeepSeek<\/a> and Beijing-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-02275-6\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-02275-6\" data-track-category=\"body text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Moonshot AI<\/a>, are gaining traction among researchers. Chinese open models already perform better than US-developed ones such as Llama (from Meta, based in Menlo Park, California) and are also poised to overtake them in terms of number of downloads, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/natolambert\/status\/1952370970762871102\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/x.com\/natolambert\/status\/1952370970762871102\" data-track-category=\"body text link\" rel=\"nofollow\">an analysis by Nathan Lambert<\/a>, a machine-learning researcher at the Allen Institute for AI in Seattle, Washington, which was carried out before gpt-oss was released.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the administration of US president Donald Trump highlighted open-weight AI models as being \u201cessential for academic research\u201d in its AI Action Plan. OpenAI\u2019s decision to launch an open model has been long in the works and is not a response to the success of Chinese models, said Greg Brockman, one of the firm\u2019s founders, who spoke to journalists ahead of the release of gpt-oss.\u201cIt was never a thing that we didn&#8217;t want to do,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>All models come with biases, so diversity among their creators benefits users, says Frieder. \u201cHaving a new top-performing model from a Western company is a step in the direction of levelling the playing field in terms of which companies dominate the open-weight model space,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Maths whizz<\/p>\n<p>Until now, OpenAI has largely published proprietary models, the exception being GPT-2, a 2019 LLM released by the firm three years before it launched its popular ChatGPT chatbot.<\/p>\n<p>The latest open models are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-00110-6\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-00110-6\" data-track-category=\"body text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018reasoners\u2019<\/a> trained to produce output using a step-by-step process that mimics thought. Previous reasoning models, such as OpenAI\u2019s o3, have been shown to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-02177-7\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-02177-7\" data-track-category=\"body text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">excel on science<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-02343-x\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-02343-x\" data-track-category=\"body text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mathematics problems<\/a>. As well as using them to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-00343-5\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-00343-5\" data-track-category=\"body text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write computer code<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-00377-9\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-00377-9\" data-track-category=\"body text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">review scholarly literature<\/a>, scientists are experimenting with using LLMs as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-02028-5\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-02028-5\" data-track-category=\"body text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI \u2018co-scientists\u2019<\/a> in the hope of accelerating research.<\/p>\n<p>In performance, OpenAI\u2019s open models seem to be close to the firm\u2019s most advanced, pay-to-access AIs \u2014 the main differences being the open models\u2019 smaller sizes and their being text-only (they do not handle images or video).
