{"id":498336,"date":"2026-03-27T13:30:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T13:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/498336\/"},"modified":"2026-03-27T13:30:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T13:30:11","slug":"a-feast-and-a-famine-why-are-profits-falling-for-major-bike-brands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/498336\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;A feast and a famine&#8217; \u2013 why are profits falling for major bike brands?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"9968d6bc-b883-49ae-a134-46e7855386cd\">Plummeting profits, declining sales, layoffs: the word cloud that surrounds major bike brands right now makes for rather dreary reading.<\/p>\n<p>In the last couple of weeks, two of the industry\u2019s biggest companies have shared worrying annual results; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/reviews\/brand\/giant\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/reviews\/brand\/giant\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/reviews\/brand\/giant\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Giant<\/a>\u2019s post-tax profits slumped 42% year-on-year in 2025, while <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/canyon\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/canyon\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/canyon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canyon<\/a>\u2019s EBITDA (a benchmark of profitability that stands for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) fell 34% in the same period.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"9968d6bc-b883-49ae-a134-46e7855386cd-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Stories about other brands paint a similar picture. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/trek-bicycle\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/trek-bicycle\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/trek-bicycle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trek<\/a>\u2019s 50-year anniversary this year has come not with celebration, but concern about the brand\u2019s future, according to a report in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/escapecollective.com\/layoffs-overstock-retail-decline-and-debt-trek-is-in-trouble\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/escapecollective.com\/layoffs-overstock-retail-decline-and-debt-trek-is-in-trouble\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Escape Collective<\/a>, with sales targets slipping and notices of redundancies. Likewise, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/reviews\/brand\/shimano\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/reviews\/brand\/shimano\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/reviews\/brand\/shimano\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shimano<\/a>, the world\u2019s most popular bike components brand, has endured three years in a row of tumbling profits across its cycling range.<\/p>\n<p>Article continues below <\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>These figures provide a snapshot of a market in distress. So what\u2019s the context behind it all? Why are bike brands struggling so much at the moment? The answer, of course, is multifaceted; it lies in geopolitics and world economics \u2013 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/us-supreme-court-rules-in-favour-of-the-bike-industry-regarding-sweeping-tariffs-but-relief-may-be-limited\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/us-supreme-court-rules-in-favour-of-the-bike-industry-regarding-sweeping-tariffs-but-relief-may-be-limited\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/us-supreme-court-rules-in-favour-of-the-bike-industry-regarding-sweeping-tariffs-but-relief-may-be-limited\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariffs<\/a> and inflation in the US, a global cost of living crisis, and deflation in China \u2013 but also a common denominator that now stretches back four years, and is still acting as a slow puncture on the industry: the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/where-did-all-the-covid-bikes-go\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/where-did-all-the-covid-bikes-go\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/where-did-all-the-covid-bikes-go\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Covid pandemic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-5a637071-133c-48c3-b67b-9dc15bf29350\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Post-pandemic blues<\/p>\n<p id=\"cc93aa15-0b81-49de-8e22-e3cec7a94399\">It\u2019s difficult to fathom now just how big cycling became during Covid. Against a backdrop of growing health anxiety, more free time, and less social spending, consumers turned to cycling, and people who hadn\u2019t owned bikes since their school days suddenly splurged on 11-speed road machines.<\/p>\n<p>Looking to harness the boom, major brands increased their footprint \u2013 Trek, according to Escape, acquired retail stores at a rate of \u201ca dozen or two dozen at a clip\u201d in 2020 and 2021; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/specialized\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/specialized\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/specialized\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Specialized<\/a> scaled up their stores at the same time \u2013 and stocked warehouses full with shiny bikes, ready to ship.<\/p>\n<p>Except many never made it back out the doors. Stock piled high, the pandemic lifted, life went back to normal, and demand quickly waned. \u201cWe had a feast and a famine,\u201d Angelo Mascelli, general manager for business at Giant US, recently told <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/bicycleretailer.com\/industry-news\/2026\/03\/24\/q-giant%E2%80%99s-mascelli-talks-2026-normalcy-and-giant%E2%80%99s-moves\" data-url=\"https:\/\/bicycleretailer.com\/industry-news\/2026\/03\/24\/q-giant%E2%80%99s-mascelli-talks-2026-normalcy-and-giant%E2%80%99s-moves\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bicycle Retailer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:66.67%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/RkLkYPxrGEKJgNxFyRJsYU.jpg\" alt=\"rows of bikes in a bicycle shop\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/RkLkYPxrGEKJgNxFyRJsYU.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/RkLkYPxrGEKJgNxFyRJsYU.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p id=\"1c2f0066-2b77-4249-bcbe-03c445e2b42b\">To clear the excess inventory, many brands turned to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/deals\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/deals\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/deals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">discounting<\/a>. This was fruitful for consumers \u2013 who doesn\u2019t love a bargain? \u2013 but cut back profits for companies, who are still feeling the impact today. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/canyon\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/canyon\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/canyon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canyon<\/a>, for example, said earlier this month it is \u201ccontinu[ing] to navigate a challenging market environment marked by oversupply and discounting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This hangover from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/price-slashing-on-bikes-helps-boost-industry-says-report\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/price-slashing-on-bikes-helps-boost-industry-says-report\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/price-slashing-on-bikes-helps-boost-industry-says-report\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">price-slashing<\/a> is a large part of the reason why some brands have experienced an increase in sales volume, but a fall in profit margin (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/reviews\/brand\/shimano\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/reviews\/brand\/shimano\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-redirect=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/shimano\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/reviews\/brand\/shimano\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shimano<\/a> reported a 2.7% rise in net sales in 2025, against a 21% decline in operating income.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFortunately, I think for most brands, we&#8217;re through the heavily distressed inventory period,\u201d Giant\u2019s Mascelli said. The hope now is that stock levels will keep stabilising as the post-Covid years roll on, and normal trade will resume.<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>    <a id=\"elk-dabbdd65-98d7-4d45-a9ad-369b13e99bfd\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Tariff trouble<\/p>\n<p id=\"11e3476d-317b-4ab7-9eef-8404656cc7bc\">In researching this article, Cycling Weekly reached out to contacts at four different major bike brands to ask about the biggest issues they face; two refused to comment and two did not reply. Business struggles, understandably, are a touchy subject.<\/p>\n<p>Though private US-based companies do not need to divulge their financial information, other bike brands give detailed summaries in their annual reports, which have formed the spine of this piece. In the time since, additional tariffs have fluctuated according to the product (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/this-will-ultimately-price-out-certain-consumers-and-hurt-demand-bike-companies-react-to-new-steel-and-aluminium-tariffs\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/this-will-ultimately-price-out-certain-consumers-and-hurt-demand-bike-companies-react-to-new-steel-and-aluminium-tariffs\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/this-will-ultimately-price-out-certain-consumers-and-hurt-demand-bike-companies-react-to-new-steel-and-aluminium-tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">steel and aluminium, two key bicycle materials, carry 50% tariffs<\/a>) and the country of origin (Asian countries, namely China and Taiwan, where many global bike brands manufacture, have been heavily targeted. Last November, trade association <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peopleforbikes.org\/news\/bike-industry-update-on-tariffs-2025?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.peopleforbikes.org\/news\/bike-industry-update-on-tariffs-2025?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PeopleForBikes<\/a> estimated the total tariff cost on bicycles imported from China to be around 60%).<\/p>\n<p>Countries like China and Taiwan are \u201cthe beating heart of the global cycling supply chain,\u201d Madison CEO Dominic Langan wrote in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/bikebiz.com\/madison-ceo-talks-sea-otter-classic-and-trade-tariffs\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/bikebiz.com\/madison-ceo-talks-sea-otter-classic-and-trade-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BikeBiz<\/a> last April. \u201cFor an industry still navigating oversupply, squeezed margins, and consumer price sensitivity, [the tariffs] couldn\u2019t have come at a worse time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Often with import duties, it\u2019s the consumer who ends up absorbing the cost. Trek and Specialized \u2013 who, despite being US-headquartered, both manufacture in China and Taiwan \u2013 announced price hikes in the US last spring; Trek did not specify by how much, while <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/trek-state-and-specialized-raise-bike-prices-while-other-brands-limit-us-releases-is-this-just-the-beginning\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/trek-state-and-specialized-raise-bike-prices-while-other-brands-limit-us-releases-is-this-just-the-beginning\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/trek-state-and-specialized-raise-bike-prices-while-other-brands-limit-us-releases-is-this-just-the-beginning\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Specialized introduced a 10% tariff surcharge as a line item on business-to-business invoices<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These rising costs made buying bikes more expensive, prohibitively so for many. As a result, the market has faded. Canyon said consumer demand has \u201csubdued\u201d in Asia and the US, specifically citing \u201ctariff uncertainty\u201d. Similarly, Taiwan-based Giant has felt a \u201cmild decline\u201d in the US, \u201cimpacted by slower demand recovery and U.S.-bound shipment delays.\u201d (Since September, Giant has also been subject to an effective <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/giant-ceo-meets-with-us-customs-officials-in-an-attempt-to-have-import-ban-removed\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/giant-ceo-meets-with-us-customs-officials-in-an-attempt-to-have-import-ban-removed\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/giant-ceo-meets-with-us-customs-officials-in-an-attempt-to-have-import-ban-removed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">import ban<\/a> in the US over <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/giant-bikes-and-accessories-made-in-taiwan-prevented-from-entering-usa-based-on-forced-labour-allegations\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/giant-bikes-and-accessories-made-in-taiwan-prevented-from-entering-usa-based-on-forced-labour-allegations\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/giant-bikes-and-accessories-made-in-taiwan-prevented-from-entering-usa-based-on-forced-labour-allegations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allegations of forced labour<\/a>. The company\u2019s global revenue fell 40% year-on-year last month).<\/p>\n<p>With such significant hurdles to access one of the world\u2019s biggest markets, it\u2019s no surprise the consequences have been felt sorely.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-4a07a011-2d8b-48ac-90e3-beae9105c06d\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><a id=\"elk-30e64114-99fb-4f63-906a-71225d410d3f\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Deflation in China<\/p>\n<p id=\"794868ad-63a1-4d5c-966d-3ee97e286163\">China, undoubtedly, remains the industry&#8217;s largest market. There are estimated to be around 500 million bikes and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/group-tests\/best-electric-bikes-need-know-e-bikes-322613\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/group-tests\/best-electric-bikes-need-know-e-bikes-322613\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/group-tests\/best-electric-bikes-need-know-e-bikes-322613\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">e-bikes<\/a> in use in the country, which is responsible for producing roughly 60% of units sold worldwide. Following the pandemic, however, the Chinese economy has been in a state of deflation, and the market has slumped.<\/p>\n<p>Hang on\u2026 deflation? I know what you&#8217;re thinking: if inflation, like that seen in the US and UK, has meant costs rising for consumers, then surely deflation \u2013 costs dropping \u2013 is a good thing? Not necessarily. Consumer behaviour trends show that, when prices appear to be going down, people tend to delay purchases, in hope of securing more of a bargain. As a result, immediate demand drops away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:66.50%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/qLXaQpnduRtw6YAiN3xeka.jpg\" alt=\"A worker is processing parts for a bicycle frame at a workshop in Huai'an, Jiangsu Province, China.\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/qLXaQpnduRtw6YAiN3xeka.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/qLXaQpnduRtw6YAiN3xeka.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p id=\"be453fd9-2bf2-4d1f-b3df-1052cb4fed33\">This economic situation is likely why Giant felt its sales performance \u201csoften\u201d in China in 2025; Shimano reported \u201clacklustre\u201d retail sales in the country, down 38% year-on-year; and Merida, which part-owns Specialized, saw a 50% decline in revenue across its Asian markets of China, Hong Kong and Japan, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bike-eu.com\/51263\/asian-market-slump-overshadows-meridas-stable-performance-in-europe\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.bike-eu.com\/51263\/asian-market-slump-overshadows-meridas-stable-performance-in-europe\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bike Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-02-11\/chinese-factory-deflation-eases-again-but-consumer-prices-cool\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-02-11\/chinese-factory-deflation-eases-again-but-consumer-prices-cool\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Business reports<\/a> suggest China\u2019s deflation is slowly easing. But there\u2019s now a worry that surging oil prices due to the war in Iran <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/iran-conflict-could-flip-chinas-deflation-into-bad-inflation-2026-03-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/iran-conflict-could-flip-chinas-deflation-into-bad-inflation-2026-03-20\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">may spike the country\u2019s economy the other way, into inflation<\/a>. How this affects the cycling industry remains to be seen, although economic turbulence is rarely good for businesses.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-c096cfce-cd3c-42bc-a2f3-f6a67ef7382c\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Turning a corner<\/p>\n<p id=\"4a838b12-042f-48ba-8a42-e204052a0d93\">So what\u2019s the outlook for major bike brands? 2025 proved a revenue struggle, and many of the market pressures that dogged the year still exist today.<\/p>\n<p>Shimano, ever the bellwether for industry health, is forecasting similar for 2026. While it plots a &#8220;moderate recovery trend&#8221; in Europe, it says the &#8220;sense of uncertainty&#8221; in the US, brought on by the &#8220;increasingly unpredictable&#8221; international situation, could deepen. China&#8217;s economy, it expects, will \u201cremain weak\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Still, there\u2019s room for optimism. The view from Giant, the world\u2019s biggest bike brand, is one of green shoots and hope for a return to normalcy. \u201cLooking ahead, the global bicycle market remains in a gradual recovery, with 2026 expected to mark a transition to a healthier, more stable market environment,\u201d Giant wrote earlier this month. It&#8217;s worth remembering, though, that Giant also predicted &#8220;profit recovery&#8221; for 2025, and then saw a 42% year-on-year decline.
