Shigella is a gut infection spread through bacteria found in faeces. It can be passed on during sex, directly or through unwashed hands, with only a tiny amount of bacteria needed to cause infection.<\/p>\n<p>The infection primarily affects gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men, according to the UK Health Security Agency. Dr Katy Sinka, head of the STI section at UKHSA, said: \u201cThe rise in sexually transmitted Shigella cases is concerning, but the risk can be reduced through good hygiene during and after sex, and by using condoms \u2014 helping to protect both yourself and your partners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important that gay and bisexual men do not dismiss their symptoms and advice on self-care and preventing dehydration can be found on the <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"NHS\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/nhs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NHS <\/a>website by searching Dysentery.<\/p>\n<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">\u201cThose diagnosed with Shigella may also have been exposed to other sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, so a <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Sexual health\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/sexual-health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sexual health<\/a> screen \u2014 at a clinic or by ordering tests online \u2014 is recommended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of Shigella usually appear within one to four days and include diarrhoea (sometimes with blood), stomach cramps and fever.<\/p>\n<p>The condition is often mistaken for food poisoning, according to the UKHSA.<\/p>\n<p>The two most commonly sexually transmitted strains of Shigella are Shigella sonnei and\u202fShigella flexneri.<\/p>\n<p>While most cases will resolve without treatment, more severe cases do require treatment and the options available are becoming limited.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, 86% of\u202fShigella sonnei\u202fsamples and 94% of\u202fShigella flexneri\u202fsamples tested showed resistance to antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p>More than half of\u202fShigella sonnei\u202fcases were extensively drug-resistant, the UKHSA said.<\/p>\n<p>People diagnosed with Shigella should avoid having sex for a week after their last symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>They should also avoid swimming pools, jacuzzis, hot tubs, sharing towels and preparing food for other people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Health chiefs have warned of \u201chigh levels\u201d of the sexually transmitted infection Shigella after 2,560 diagnoses were recorded&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":498545,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[10],"tags":[4414,175357,59,102,31552,36057,175355,175356,56,1558,54,55],"class_list":["post-498544","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-antibiotics","tag-drug-resistant-infection","tag-gb","tag-health","tag-sexual-health","tag-sexually-transmitted-infections","tag-sexually-transmitted-infections-stis","tag-shigella","tag-uk","tag-uk-health-security-agency","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/498544","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=498544"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/498544\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/498545"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=498544"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=498544"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=498544"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
