Tom Pidcock<\/a> was left counting himself fortunate after a dramatic crash on Stage 5 of the Volta a Catalunya<\/a>, revealing he went off the road and down a ravine during a high-speed descent before the race\u2019s decisive final climb.The Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team<\/a> leader was among several contenders affected by incidents earlier in the stage, but his fall proved far more serious than a routine slide-out, forcing him off the road and out of sight before he was able to recover and continue.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was drinking on the descent and misjudged a corner. I overshot it and went down the ravine,\u201d Pidcock said afterwards in a Q36.5 press email. \u201cIt was like one of these horror crashes you see, but I\u2019m very lucky that I am okay.\u201d<\/p>\n


\nCrash leaves Pidcock out of sight before recovery<\/p>\n

The severity of the incident was underlined by what followed. \u201cI am lucky I could talk on the radio. I was far from the road, and nobody knew I was there,\u201d he explained. \u201cI\u2019m happy I could finish the stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pidcock was able to return to the road, change bikes and rejoin the race, ultimately reaching the finish despite the disruption. Initial medical assessments were reassuring, with no immediate signs of serious injury, although he is set to undergo further evaluations.<\/p>\n

Stage impact follows heavy fall<\/p>\n

The crash came at a crucial point in the stage, shortly before the final ascent of the Coll de Pal, where Jonas Vingegaard would go on to decide the race with a decisive attack.<\/p>\n

For Pidcock, the incident left him on the back foot heading into the climb, forcing him into a recovery effort rather than allowing him to position himself for the decisive move. He was unable to feature in the fight at the front as the race split apart under Vingegaard\u2019s acceleration.<\/p>\n

Despite that, the overriding outcome was not defined by time gaps or general classification implications, but by the fact he was able to walk away from a crash he himself described as one of the most frightening of his career. \u201cI\u2019ll go for a check, but I think I\u2019m okay,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
