{"id":500016,"date":"2026-03-28T11:54:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-28T11:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/500016\/"},"modified":"2026-03-28T11:54:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-28T11:54:08","slug":"large-crowds-expected-at-london-march-against-the-far-right-live-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/500016\/","title":{"rendered":"Large crowds expected at London march against the far right \u2013 live | London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Key events<\/p>\n<p>Show key events only<\/p>\n<p>Please turn on JavaScript to use this feature<\/p>\n<p>Those in power using racism to &#8216;feather own nests&#8217;, head of NEU says<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union (NEU), said those in power have been using racism to \u201cfeather their own nests\u201d, as he criticised Keir Starmer\u2019s comments around immigration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In May last year, the prime minister said the UK risked becoming \u201can island of strangers\u201d, in a speech about immigration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kebede said before the Together Alliance rally against the far-right on Saturday: \u201cWhat we have seen \u2013 in the age of Trump in particular \u2013 is those in power using racism to feather their own nests, whether it\u2019s Donald Trump, whether it\u2019s Nigel Farage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAnd what\u2019s even worse is we\u2019ve seen the Prime Minister, instead of taking it on, tail-end it with the \u2018island of strangers\u2019 nonsense that he pedalled last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He added: \u201cThe toxic climate that is taking place in society festers into schools. Photograph: Wiktor Szymanowicz\/Future Publishing\/Getty Images<a href=\"mailto:?subject=Large crowds expected at London march against the far right \u2013 live&amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/live\/2026\/mar\/28\/london-protest-march-together-alliance-against-the-far-right-latest-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-69c7bdee8f084d6bedab5aa6#block-69c7bdee8f084d6bedab5aa6\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1mulgdf\">Share<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kevin Courtney, chairman of the Together Alliance has said shadow justice secretary Nick Timothy would have been \u201csacked\u201d for his comments about Muslim public prayer if he had made them 10 years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Earlier this month, the Conservative MP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/mar\/19\/badenoch-nick-timothy-islamic-prayer-act-of-domination\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">described Muslim public prayer<\/a> as an \u201cact of domination and decision\u201d, referring to an open Iftar event held in Trafalgar Square.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Courtney said: \u201cNick Timothy, who is a frontbencher for the Conservative Party, criticised the Muslim community, said they were taking over Trafalgar Square when they were having an Iftar event\u2026 they were praying as part of that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAll faiths use Trafalgar Square. The idea that Nick Timothy picks on one particular community, and criticise it, demonises it, I would say\u2026 it\u2019s disturbing that those ideas have cut into the mainstream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201c10 years ago, he would have been sacked from the Tory frontbench for saying that. He\u2019s not being sacked now, so we are disturbed by the growth of far-right ideas across the mainstream, as well as in the particular expressions, like Tommy Robinson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:?subject=Large crowds expected at London march against the far right \u2013 live&amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/live\/2026\/mar\/28\/london-protest-march-together-alliance-against-the-far-right-latest-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-69c7bb478f086b26b5ba1bf6#block-69c7bb478f086b26b5ba1bf6\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1mulgdf\">Share<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Meanwhile, in the US, millions of Americans are expected to take to the streets on Saturday for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jan\/28\/third-no-kings-protest-march-minnesota-ice\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">No Kings protests<\/a> against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/trump-administration\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The protests, which have no connection to the demonstrations taking place in the UK, will be led by a coalition of organisers that includes \u201canti-authoritarian\u201d groups Indivisible and 50501, labor unions and other grassroots organisations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">More than 3,000 events are planned in all 50 states, plus in 16 countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Saturday\u2019s protest will be the third No Kings; the last one in October drew 7 million people nationwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Protesters are expected to turn out on the basis of a multitude of issues, organisers said, from ICE raids to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/feb\/03\/trump-republicans-nationalize-elections-midterms\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">voting<\/a> rights threats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cSince the last No Kings, we\u2019re seeing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2026\/mar\/21\/us-gas-price-surge-iran-electric-cars\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">higher gas prices<\/a> and groceries, all while there\u2019s an illegal war in Iran,\u201d said Sarah Parker, the executive director of Voices of Florida and a national coordinator for the 50501 movement. \u201cThe people of America are pissed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A protester holds a sign reading \u201cNO KINGS\u201d with a crown illustration crossed out during a \u201cNo Kings\u201d protest in October. Photograph: Daniel Cole\/Reuters<a href=\"mailto:?subject=Large crowds expected at London march against the far right \u2013 live&amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/live\/2026\/mar\/28\/london-protest-march-together-alliance-against-the-far-right-latest-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-69c7b1778f084d6bedab5a6b#block-69c7b1778f084d6bedab5a6b\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1mulgdf\">Share<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Updated at\u00a007.26 EDT<\/p>\n<p>Who are the Together Alliance?<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dozens of coaches will leave from across the country on Saturday morning \u2013 including 10 from Manchester alone \u2013 to begin marching from Park Lane to Trafalgar Square at midday but who are Together Alliance?<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">From musicians including Brian Eno and Self Esteem to actors including Christopher Eccleston and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/maxine-peake\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maxine Peake<\/a>, the support reflects a familiar pattern in British protest movements \u2013 moments when politics spills into culture, and vice versa, and a chance for people to demonstrate their progressive values.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The anti-discrimination group Stand Up to Racism are members of the alliance and Sabby Dhalu, a co-convener, has said the Together Alliance\u2019s formation was a direct reaction to growing far-right sentiment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ng-interactive\/2025\/sep\/16\/far-right-march-london-transatlantic\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">espoused in last<\/a> September\u2019s \u201cunite the kingdom\u201d demonstration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dhalu said: \u201cThe overwhelming majority of people reject the racism, Islamophobia, division, hatred and violence promoted by Tommy Robinson and the far right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis Saturday we will demonstrate that clearly.
