{"id":500755,"date":"2026-03-28T21:39:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-28T21:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/500755\/"},"modified":"2026-03-28T21:39:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-28T21:39:09","slug":"thousands-march-through-london-in-stand-against-the-far-right-protests-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/500755\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands march through London in stand against the far right | Protests News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">Organisers say \u2018Together Alliance\u2019 event was the largest anti-far-right march in British history, drawing half a million people.<\/p>\n<p>London, United Kingdom \u2013 Tens of thousands of people have marched through central London in what organisers are calling the largest ever demonstration against the far right in British history.<\/p>\n<p>The Together Alliance march, backed by about 500 groups including trade unions, antiracism campaigners and Muslim representative bodies, brought together a diverse crowd of all ages from across the country on Saturday, converging on Whitehall near the Houses of Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>Organisers said that half a million people took part.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Courtney, chairman of the Together Alliance, told crowds the march \u201cgives us all confidence to carry on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>London\u2019s Metropolitan Police put the figure considerably lower, at approximately 50,000, though officers acknowledged it was difficult to reach an accurate figure given how spread out the crowds were.<\/p>\n<p>The protest was met with a far smaller group of counterprotesters waving Israeli flags and Iran\u2019s pre-1979 monarchical flag.<\/p>\n<p>Aadam Muuse, a trade union activist, told Al Jazeera that racism and Islamophobia had moved from the fringes into mainstream politics, and was \u201cbeing pushed by parliamentarians\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said the march was \u201cmuch needed to push back against [Reform leader Nigel] Farage and his ilk,\u201d adding that the populist party \u201cmust be defeated at the ballot box and Tommy Robinson challenged on the streets\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4442486\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2026-03-28T135315Z_334541513_RC2ODKAXBQEL_RTRMADP_3_BRITAIN-PROTESTS-1774717677.jpg\" alt=\"Demonstrators march against far-right extremism from Park Lane to Trafalgar Square, organised by the Together Alliance, a coalition of unions and civil society groups, in London, Britain, March 28, 2026. REUTERS\/Hannah McKay\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/>Demonstrators march against \u2018far-right extremism\u201d from Park Lane to Trafalgar Square, organised by the Together Alliance, a coalition of unions and civil society groups, in London [Hannah McKay\/Reuters]<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera\u2019s Milena Veselinovic, reporting from the march, said demonstrators were resisting what they saw as \u201cthe politics of hate and division\u201d in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>One demonstrator, activist and writer Hamja Ahsan, told Al Jazeera he was motivated to attend after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/13\/over-100000-attend-london-rally-led-by-far-right-activist-tommy-robinson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rally<\/a> organised by the far-right agitator-activist Tommy Robinson that drew 150,000 people and was marred by violence that injured several police officers. Robinson is reportedly planning another rally in May.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to show them that we\u2019re the majority,\u201d Ahsan said. \u201cAt a street level, the far right won\u2019t take over our streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the atmosphere on Saturday was akin to the Notting Hill Carnival, as the march united people from all backgrounds, \u201cfrom pensioners to children\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Museum worker Charlotte Elliston told Al Jazeera that she also feels unsettled by the far right\u2019s creeping rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think this would never happen here, and then all of a sudden this might happen,\u201d she said. \u201cYou see that it is getting scary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4442481\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2026-03-28T145320Z_1986002649_RC2PDKAZP0KY_RTRMADP_3_BRITAIN-PROTESTS-1774717533.jpg\" alt=\"A man holds a placard, as demonstrators march against far-right extremism from Park Lane to Trafalgar Square, organised by the Together Alliance, a coalition of unions and civil society groups, in London, Britain, March 28, 2026. REUTERS\/Hannah McKay\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/>A man holds a placard, as demonstrators march against far-right extremism from Park Lane to Trafalgar Square, organised by the Together Alliance, a coalition of unions and civil society groups, in London [Hannah McKay\/Reuters]<\/p>\n<p>Several left-wing politicians joined the demonstration.<\/p>\n<p>Independent MP Jeremy Corbyn posted on X that the \u201cproblems we face are not caused by migrants or refugees\u201d, arguing they were rooted instead in \u201can economic system rigged in favour of corporations and billionaires\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>MP Zarah Sultana said on X, \u201cThere\u2019s one minority we should be angry at: the billionaires funding division while working class people can\u2019t make ends meet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Green Party leader Zack Polanski, Dianne Abbott and Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham were also among the crowds.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Historic demonstration\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The rights group Amnesty UK hailed the \u201chistoric demonstration\u201d, saying marchers were \u201ccalling for a different vision of society \u2013 one which places dignity, compassion and human rights at its heart\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A separate march organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, which assembled at Exhibition Road near Hyde Park, converged with the main demonstration during the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen people were arrested outside New Scotland Yard on Saturday after staging a protest in support of Palestine Action, the protest group which remains proscribed under the Terrorism Act despite a High Court ruling in February that the government\u2019s decision to ban it was unlawful.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4442493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/AFP__20260328__A62L86M__v1__HighRes__BritainPoliticsProtest-1774717789.jpg\" alt=\"Protesters holding placards gather ahead of speeches after a march against the far right, organised by the Together Alliance, in central London on March 28, 2026.
