Rarely does the word pension enter the discussion. Yet, quietly and steadily, pensions are becoming one of the most critical pillars supporting India’s long-term economic stability.

For a country that is young today but ageing tomorrow, pensions are no longer just about retirement. They are about how India will fund longevity, protect dignity, and sustain economic momentum in the decades ahead.

India’s demographic moment: An opportunity and a warning

India is currently enjoying a demographic dividend. A large working-age population is driving consumption, savings, and investment. But this advantage is time-bound. By 2050, India is expected to have nearly 320 million people above the age of 60.

This shift raises a simple but uncomfortable question: Who will support India’s elderly?

Traditionally, families have played that role. But in an increasingly urban, mobile, and nuclear society, relying solely on family support is becoming unrealistic.

Awareness Is Rising; Preparedness Is Not

Multiple studies show that Indians recognise retirement planning as important, yet preparedness remains weak.

According to the PGIM India Retirement Readiness Report 2025, only 37% of Indians have an actual retirement plan, sharply down from 67% in 2023. The India Retirement Study shows that 24% of urban Indians have made no progress at all toward retirement savings.

Confidence levels are equally concerning. Only around 11% feel confident their current investments will meet retirement goals, and just 3.6% strongly believe their existing products are sufficient.

Why This Matters Beyond the Individual

Pensions are not just personal finance tools; they are macroeconomic stabilisers.

They encourage long-term savings, reduce future fiscal pressure on governments, and support stable consumer spending among retirees.

India’s pension architecture

India’s pension framework includes social assistance schemes, organised-sector pensions through EPF and EPS, and voluntary market-linked systems such as the National Pension System (NPS). With low costs, portability, tax efficiency, and long-term market-linked returns, NPS has become a core pillar of modern retirement planning for salaried, self-employed, and government employees alike.

An important and often under‑emphasised component of India’s retirement ecosystem is the role played by life insurance companies. Beyond protection during working years, life insurers offer structured pension and annuity solutions that convert accumulated savings into guaranteed or predictable lifelong income—helping retirees preserve dignity and financial independence. These solutions directly address two of the biggest retirement risks: outliving one’s savings and meeting rising health and medical expenses without destabilising household finances. Life insurance companies also bring long‑term discipline, risk‑management expertise, and advisory‑led planning to retirement preparation, making pensions more holistic rather than purely accumulation‑focused.

For the unorganized sector, schemes such as Atal Pension Yojana and the Maandhan schemes extend coverage to informal workers, farmers, gig workers, and small traders.

The persistent coverage gap

Despite progress, only about 15–25% of India’s workforce is covered by formal pension systems. While many save something, contributions are often too small to ensure long-term security.

The road ahead

As India moves toward Viksit Bharat 2047, expanding pension coverage, encouraging disciplined savings, and improving financial literacy will be critical. A strong pension system can transform longevity from a risk into an economic dividend.

(The article is authored by Kamal Bhardwaj, Chief Bancassurance Officer, Tata AIA Life Insurance)

When conversations turn to India’s economic future, we instinctively talk about GDP growth, manufacturing, infrastructure, startups, or digital…

[14
84,4176,4174,4175,56,54,55
post-501593","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-personal-finance","tag-business","tag-finance","tag-personal-finance","tag-personalfinance","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
