{"id":502484,"date":"2026-03-29T22:40:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-29T22:40:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/502484\/"},"modified":"2026-03-29T22:40:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-29T22:40:07","slug":"sam-burgess-on-warrington-wolves-leeds-rhinos-defeat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/502484\/","title":{"rendered":"Sam Burgess on Warrington Wolves&#8217; Leeds Rhinos defeat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  The Wire would have gone top of the Super League table had they managed to make it five victories out of five at Leeds Rhinos on Sunday, and they looked well set to do so when they motored into a 12-0 lead before half time.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  However, the hosts reeled them in during a back-and-forth second half in which the lead changed hands three times, eventually seeing out a 26-22 victory.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  After the game, which was played amid testing conditions as wind and rain swirled around Headingley, Burgess lamented his side\u2019s inability to manage Leeds\u2019 strong second-half response but, as was the case after each of his side\u2019s victories, refused to get too carried away.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIt\u2019s a tough loss,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIt was a funny old game with hard conditions to manage for both sides.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThey\u2019re a very dangerous side and we paid for not managing that in the second half.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI was really proud of our effort to stay at it and keep challenging things \u2013 I thought we might have had a chance in the last couple of minutes, but we didn\u2019t have enough left.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI think I know my side pretty well \u2013 I\u2019ve seen the work they\u2019ve put in.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cAlthough it\u2019s not the result we wanted, it\u2019s okay because there\u2019s a lot of us who are learning along the way.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cEwan Irwin will certainly learn a lot from tonight and as a group, we\u2019ll definitely learn. We\u2019ve been picking up things as we go and win or lose, we\u2019ll always learn something.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Maika Sivo started Leeds\u2019 fightback with two tries before half time after Josh Thewlis and Josh Smith had earned Wire a good lead before going on to complete his hat-trick after the break, with Jack Bird and Brodie Croft also touching down.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Toby King had briefly given Warrington the lead again after Sivo had completed his treble, with Smith then doubling his tally to set up a grandstand finale.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In between Sivo\u2019s first two tries, however, James Harrison had a try chalked off by video referee Liam Moore for a knock-on, with the simple conversion likely to have moved Warrington into a 16-4 lead.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cLeeds are a very good side, but it was unfortunate with the James Harrison try \u2013 if he gets that ball down, it could have been a different game and they went up the other end and scored,\u201d Burgess said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThat\u2019s how the game goes \u2013 you have to manage those swings and moments of either scoring or not scoring.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cUltimately, we were on the wrong side of it.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Burgess had made the call to keep faith with teenage half-back Ewan Irwin after two impressive outings in place of Marc Sneyd, with the 18-year-old making his most high-profile appearance to date.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  And after a mixed afternoon in difficult weather \u2013 he kicked a superb first-half 40-20 but was part of a right edge that was tortured defensively \u2013 Burgess repeated his desire for Irwin to be allowed the time and space to develop even if it means him making mistakes.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cHe had some good moments and some tough times as well, but some of the most experienced players out there had tough times as well,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cOne thing I do know about Ewan is that we\u2019re willing to be patient with him \u2013 the same with Cai (Taylor-Wray) and our other young players.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cAt some point, we have to put them into these scenarios and see them at this level but with that, we have to realise that there\u2019s going to be development and understand that they\u2019re not going to be the finished article straight away.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Wire would have gone top of the Super League table had they managed to make it five&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":502485,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[35],"tags":[5903,101,56,54,55],"class_list":{"0":"post-502484","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-rugby","8":"tag-rugby","9":"tag-sports","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom","12":"tag-unitedkingdom"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/502484","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=502484"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/502484\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/502485"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=502484"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=502484"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=502484"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
