Worcestershire\u2019s new overseas signing has arrived under a cloud after leaving a one-day final in South Africa in order to catch his flight to England. Beyers Swanepoel was playing for Lions against Titans on Sunday when, according to a report by Times Live<\/a>, he set off for the airport \u201caround the 43rd over\u201d of the second innings without informing his teammates as to why. It was widely assumed he had picked up an injury.<\/p>\n

The all-rounder had bowled his full allocation of 10 overs, but because there was no injury, Lions were denied a substitute fielder for the final stages of the match. Titans went on to chase down the target with a ball to spare.<\/p>\n

There are conflicting reports as to whether the Lions management knew of his intention to fly to the UK that evening. Either way, the 27-year-old\u2019s earlier exit has angered the setup. Jono Leaf-Wright, the Lions chief executive, said: \u201cI\u2019m just extremely disappointed with Beyers. This is not the kind of conduct we, as the Lions, expect from our players. He has let down his teammates and the union.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to ESPNCricinfo<\/a>, Swanepoel\u2019s time at Worcestershire on a season-long deal could be in doubt. Overseas players require a No Objection Certificate from their home board, with Lions and Cricket South Africa ready to investigate the circumstances surrounding his surprise departure.<\/p>\n
