{"id":505264,"date":"2026-03-31T13:53:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T13:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/505264\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T13:53:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T13:53:09","slug":"amazon-microsoft-dodge-uk-cloud-market-dominance-designations-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/505264\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon, Microsoft dodge UK cloud market dominance designations \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The CMA will continue to engage with the two firms and monitor the changes, it said.<\/p>\n<p>The regulator simultaneously announced that it will open a new SMS designation investigation into <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/215872\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Microsoft\u2019s corporate software services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/2026\/03\/31\/working-constructively-with-the-uk-cma-to-support-customer-choice-and-cloud-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a blog post<\/a>, Microsoft President Brad Smith said that the changes proposed by the software giant address the concerns that the CMA raised during its investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appreciate the opportunity we have had for direct and constructive conversations with the CMA and its staff and look forward to an ongoing dialogue in relation to relevant cloud issues in the future,\u201d said Smith.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for AWS said that the agency\u2019s decision \u201caccurately reflected the industry\u2019s dynamism,\u201d noting that they had previously been disappointed by the agency\u2019s 2025 recommendation to designate AWS.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In January, the chair of the panel that was in charge of the investigation into AWS and Microsoft Azure stepped down, citing\u00a0 the slow pace of implementing the investigation\u2019s recommendations, as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themorningintelligence.uk\/cma-cloud-inquiry-chair-kip-meek-quits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Morning Intelligence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission is also considering whether or not to designate AWS and Microsoft Azure under the EU\u2019s own digital market power regime.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The CMA will continue to engage with the two firms and monitor the changes, it said.
