js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"one study\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69cbb392e4b0128a9ef9f728\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35798020\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-item-name=\"which are high in\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69cbb392e4b0128a9ef9f728\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" density and strength at weight-bearing parts of the hip for post-menopausal women.<\/p>\n<p>What did the research show? <\/p>\n<p>The researchers followed a group of 235 postmenopausal women, who are at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/osteoporosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"greater risk of bone loss\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69cbb392e4b0128a9ef9f728\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/osteoporosis\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">greater risk of bone loss<\/a>, over a year. <\/p>\n<p>They told one group to eat 50g (about five to six prunes) a day during the trial, and another group to eat 100g a day. A third group didn\u2019t eat any prunes at all.<\/p>\n<p>Though both prune levels were beneficial, the first group (50g) were more likely to stick to the habit, which meant they tended to get better results. <\/p>\n<p>Professor Mary Jane De Souza, the study\u2019s lead author, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psu.edu\/news\/health-and-human-development\/story\/prunes-may-help-prevent-bone-loss-and-preserve-bone-strength\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"said\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69cbb392e4b0128a9ef9f728\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.psu.edu\/news\/health-and-human-development\/story\/prunes-may-help-prevent-bone-loss-and-preserve-bone-strength\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>: \u201cConsuming five to six prunes a day for 12 months resulted in preservation of bone at the hip, a finding that was observable at six months and persisted through month 12.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Postmenopausal women who didn\u2019t consume any prunes saw a 1.1% bone loss in the same time period, while for those in the study, it stayed the same.<\/p>\n<p>That benefit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/womens-health\/surprising-foods-that-boost-bone-health\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"could lead to\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69cbb392e4b0128a9ef9f728\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/womens-health\/surprising-foods-that-boost-bone-health\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">could lead to<\/a> fewer bone breaks.<\/p>\n<p>It could have benefits for bone quality, too <\/p>\n<p>The same group of women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/v\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"were part of another study\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69cbb392e4b0128a9ef9f728\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"\/v\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"feed\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">were part of another study<\/a> looking at how prunes seemed to affect the structure and estimated strength of their tibia. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first randomised controlled trial to look at three-dimensional bone outcomes with respect to bone structure, geometry and estimated strength,\u201d Professor De Souza said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our study, we saw that daily prune consumption impacted factors related to fracture risk.
