Hollyoaks spoilers follow for Wednesday’s episode (1 April), which is available to watch now on streaming service Channel 4 and hasn’t yet aired on TV.

Hollyoaks has aired the return of villain Clare Devine as she stages a surprise comeback. While her prison escape has already been announced, her appearance in today’s episode was kept under wraps – and the fate of two characters has been left up in the air.

In today’s episode, newly engaged Donny received a mysterious phone call after Sully’s plea hearing – a visit request from Clare, who blackmailed Donny last year after they slept together.

Donny secretly showed up at the prison to hear her out, and Clare told him that she had the means to get Sully killed in prison. She reminded him that they almost ran away together months back and admitted that she had never stopped thinking about him.

Despite Clare’s pleas to give them a chance, claiming to be able to get out of jail that day, Donny insisted that he was happy with Misbah and walked out – leaving her heartbroken and furious.

Later, a prison guard realised that CCTV footage of Clare had been looped and was horrified to discover that she had managed to escape in the back of a van.

Meanwhile, Froggy was on hand to support devastated Rex, whose relationship was in tatters – with Ste struggling to accept that his fiancé is experimenting with wearing women’s clothes.

Froggy reassured Rex that things would work out, then turned up at The Hutch to confront Ste about the way he’s treated his partner. Ste tried to explain himself, but Froggy made it clear to Ste that if he can’t accept Rex for who he is, he should stay away.

Back at home, Rex prepared to leave for a callout and was touched when Froggy began playing the piano. The pair shared a moving moment, as Rex thanked his grandad for support before heading out.

Froggy, still playing the piano, got a scare when he turned around and came face to face with his granddaughter Clare, who had made her way to the flat – after reapplying her famous red lipstick.

Clare explained that she had a fling with one of the guards, who helped her grand escape plan, and told Froggy that he was back to pick up a gun that her late sister Grace had secretly hidden.

She intended to make a fresh start away from the village, but Froggy refused to let her go and lose another granddaughter so urged her to return to jail and serve her sentence.

It looked like Froggy had convinced her, but things took a turn when Clare realised that her grandad had called the emergency services on her. As a violent struggle ensued, Clare and Froggy both reached for the weapon – and two gunshots were then heard.

What has unfolded, and have either Clare or Froggy been wounded?

Hollyoaks airs on Mondays-Wednesdays with its Channel 4 streaming premiere at 7am, then an E4 broadcast the same night at 7pm. Full episodes are also released on YouTube a week after their Channel 4 release.
