Munich 2-1 Manchester United (5-3 agg): German side score late to reach Women’s Champions League semi-finals

Manchester United are out of the Women’s Champions League after Bayern Munich struck twice late on to end the English side’s resistance.

Trailing 3-2 from the first leg, an early goal from Melvine Malard gave United hope of a turnaround to reach the semi-finals in their debut season in the competition.

They were much the better side in the first half but Bayern dominated the second, with goals from Glodis Viggosdottir and Linda Dallman in the last 10 minutes settling the tie in the German side’s favour.

Victory takes Bayern through to the last four for the third time while Marc Skinner’s side have more than three weeks to shake off this painful loss before the focus turns to qualifying for the competition again through the Women’s Super League.

United had been aiming to become the first English team to win at Bayern in the competition, and made a flying start at Allianz Arena with Malard forcing a good save from home goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic after just four minutes.

The visitors remained on the front foot and when Mahmutovic came out to clear Jayde Riviere’s ball in behind it bounced off her own defender, leaving Malard to tap into an unguarded net.

Mahmutovic was called into action again soon after to tip Malard’s well-struck shot around the post as United continued to threaten.

Bayern gradually grew into the game but were unusually sloppy in possession throughout the first half.

That changed in the second as they ensured the game was played almost exclusively in the United half.

The visitors defended doggedly but it took a smart save from Phallon Tullis-Joyce to keep out former Chelsea striker Pernille Harder after a nice turn in the box.

A goalmouth scramble almost brought the equaliser for Bayern and Millie Turner made a superb block to deny full-back Giulia Gwinn.

But Bayern were relentless and got their reward nine minutes from time as Viggosdottir headed Carolin Simon’s corner goalwards and this time Tullis-Joyce could not keep it out.

Three minutes later, Dallman put the result beyond doubt as she fired the ball high into the net after another Viggosdottir header had been cleared off the line by Malard.

Bayern can now look ahead to the semis with three-time winners Barcelona, who lead rivals Real Madrid 6-2 after the first leg of their quarter-final, their likely opponents.

Manchester United are out of the
