Locals in a village dubbed the “Venice of the Cotswolds”<\/a> have said their community is no longer recognisable after being blighted by hundreds of thousands of tourists.<\/p>\n

Bourton-on-the-Water, named for its Venetian-style bridges over the River Windrush, attracts crowds of tourists who snap “content” for social media.<\/p>\n

Locals now argue the community is being “ruined” by content creators, with the 4,000-strong population forced to contend with 300,000 visitors in the last 12 months alone.<\/p>\n

Tourists have been photographed wading into the river, obstructing roads<\/a> and creating lengthy queues at pubs and bakeries.<\/p>\n

One TikTok user, Christopher Lee, who boasts more than 55,000 followers, posted a video of the Cotswolds village in which he said: “I am obsessed, this is one place I would love to live in – but it’s just full of tourists.”<\/p>\n

A new survey has now revealed that more than nine in 10 residents believe visitors are damaging their daily existence.<\/p>\n

Bourton Residents’ Voice distributed questionnaires to 4,000 locals and received 200 responses.<\/p>\n

The findings showed 94.6 per cent of participants consider visitor numbers excessive, whilst 90.8 per cent reported their quality of life had suffered.<\/p>\n

Additionally, 92.6 per cent expressed dissatisfaction with traffic and parking management, and 82 per cent feel the village has lost its community spirit.<\/p>\n

A spokesman for Bourton Residents’ Voice said: “This survey shows that what many residents have been experiencing for years is real, widespread, and getting worse.”<\/p>\n

They added: “Bourton is not just a destination – it is a community and right now, that community is being pushed aside.<\/p>\n

“This is not about stopping tourism. It is about restoring balance and ensuring that the village remains a place where people can live, not just visit.”<\/p>\n

Cotswold District Councillor Paul Hodgkinson said the council is now “leading a new initiative to get to some solutions as quickly as possible in place”.<\/p>\n

He added: “In April there’s a workshop of all stakeholders to look at the whole village and its parking and traffic challenges.’<\/p>\n

One resident responding to the survey fumed: “The infrastructure is buckled as we speak – in fact, it is broken.”<\/p>\n

Another local commented: “The place is overrun. Yes they are welcome but the village cannot cope.”<\/p>\n

However, one visitor questioned the validity of the survey, saying: “Six per cent response from a village of 4,000. That really is a snapshot! Not exactly comprehensive.”<\/p>\n

“They spend so long advertising it as a tourist destination, now complain about all the tourists,” they added.<\/p>\n
