{"id":507818,"date":"2026-04-01T22:12:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T22:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/507818\/"},"modified":"2026-04-01T22:12:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T22:12:10","slug":"tourist-protests-erupt-in-bourton-on-the-water-as-locals-warn-community-has-been-destroyed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/507818\/","title":{"rendered":"Tourist protests erupt in Bourton-on-the-Water as locals warn community has been DESTROYED"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Locals in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbnews.com\/news\/bourton-on-the-water-gloucestershire-oldest-shop-shuts-tourists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">village dubbed the &#8220;Venice of the Cotswolds&#8221;<\/a> have said their community is no longer recognisable after being blighted by hundreds of thousands of tourists.<\/p>\n<p>Bourton-on-the-Water, named for its Venetian-style bridges over the River Windrush, attracts crowds of tourists who snap &#8220;content&#8221; for social media.<\/p>\n<p>Locals now argue the community is being &#8220;ruined&#8221; by content creators, with the 4,000-strong population forced to contend with 300,000 visitors in the last 12 months alone.<\/p>\n<p>Tourists have been photographed wading into the river, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbnews.com\/news\/bourton-residents-fume-village-ban-coaches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">obstructing roads<\/a> and creating lengthy queues at pubs and bakeries.<\/p>\n<p>One TikTok user, Christopher Lee, who boasts more than 55,000 followers, posted a video of the Cotswolds village in which he said: &#8220;I am obsessed, this is one place I would love to live in &#8211; but it&#8217;s just full of tourists.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A new survey has now revealed that more than nine in 10 residents believe visitors are damaging their daily existence.<\/p>\n<p>Bourton Residents&#8217; Voice distributed questionnaires to 4,000 locals and received 200 responses.<\/p>\n<p>The findings showed 94.6 per cent of participants consider visitor numbers excessive, whilst 90.8 per cent reported their quality of life had suffered.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"e1dbf\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"e3c3dc07cb4e1f4b28242145cef9230e\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20501%20567'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/christopher-lee.png\" width=\"501\" height=\"567\" alt=\"Christopher Lee\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I am obsessed, this is one place I would love to live in &#8211; but it&#8217;s just full of tourists,&#8217; Christopher Lee said<\/p>\n<p> | <\/p>\n<p>TIKTOK\/CHRISTOPHERLEVANS<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, 92.6 per cent expressed dissatisfaction with traffic and parking management, and 82 per cent feel the village has lost its community spirit.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for Bourton Residents&#8217; Voice said: &#8220;This survey shows that what many residents have been experiencing for years is real, widespread, and getting worse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They added: &#8220;Bourton is not just a destination &#8211; it is a community and right now, that community is being pushed aside.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is not about stopping tourism. That really is a snapshot!
