Tiger Woods has announced he is \u201cstepping away\u201d from golf to \u201cseek treatment\u201d.<\/p>\n
The news comes in the wake of a car crash<\/a> that left the 15-time major champion behind bars on Friday.<\/p>\n Woods\u2019 statement, released on social media, read: \u201cI know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today.<\/p>\n \u201cI am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is necessary in order for me to prioritise my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally.<\/p>\n \u201cI appreciate your understanding and support and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n While there was no specific mention of his involvement in next week\u2019s Masters<\/a>, Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley soon cleared that up with a short statement of his own.<\/p>\n While Woods had yet to decide on whether or not he would tee up in the tournament itself, it was unlikely even before his accident. He was, however, due to attend Rory McIlroy\u2019s Champions Dinner<\/a>, as well as open his new golf course at The Patch<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cAugusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament fully support Tiger Woods as he focuses on his well-being,\u201d it read. <\/p>\n \u201cAlthough Tiger will not be joining us in person next week, his presence will be felt here at Augusta.\u201d<\/p>\n The PGA Tour also noted that Woods \u201cis a legend of our sport whose impact extends far beyond his achievements on the course\u201d. <\/p>\n \u201cBut, above all else, Tiger is a person, and our focus is on his health and well-being.
