\n\tBig changes are underway at Bad Robot<\/a>. Details are still coming together, but sources say J.J. Abrams<\/a> is beginning to downsize the production banner.<\/p>\n

\n\tSources were not clear on the exact number of cuts to come as a result of the downsizing, but it was characterized as being an across-the-board change rather than being specific to one division of the company versus another. Furthermore, Bad Robot will shutter its LA office and move operations to New York. With this smaller footprint, Abrams will continue to work with outside producers to develop feature and TV projects.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe move comes amid serious belt-tightening all across Hollywood. In December 2024, Bad Robot extended its long-term deal <\/a>with Warner Bros, the company\u2019s home studio since 2006. But instead of the five-year overall deal the company inked in 2019 \u2014 estimated at nine-figures, with a structure that allowed Abrams to sign other writers to overall deals \u2014\u00a0Bad Robot signed a more modest first-look pact that covered film and TV productions.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor nearly 30 years, Abrams and Bad Robot have been the force behind massive film and TV hits, particularly in the sci-fi genre, including \u201cAlias,\u201d \u201cLost,\u201d \u201cFringe,\u201d \u201cWestworld,\u201d \u201cSuper 8,\u201d \u201cCloverfield,\u201d the \u201cMission: Impossible\u201d sequels and the latest \u201cStar Trek\u201d and \u201cStar Wars\u201d big-screen reboots.<\/p>\n

\n\tAbrams founded the Santa Monica-based production company in 1999. He co-leads the banner with executive VP Bryan Burk, with Katie McGrath serving as co-CEO and overseeing culture and philanthropy.<\/p>\n

\n\tBad Robot most recently produced \u201cThe End of Oak Street,\u201d a new sci-fi thriller starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor. The movie, from filmmaker David Robert Mitchell (\u201cIt Follows\u201d), is set to debut theatrically on August 14. Then, \u201cThe Great Beyond\u201d \u2014 Abrams\u2019 first directorial effort <\/a>since 2019\u2019s \u201cStar Wars: Episode IX \u2013 The Rise of Skywalker,\u201d starring Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega and Samuel L. Jackson \u2014 will debut in Imax theaters this November. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe company is also producing the animated feature adaptation of the Dr. Seuss classic \u201cOh the Places You\u2019ll Go.\u201d Jon M. Chu and Jill Culton are directing the movie, which features voice performances from Ariana Grande and Josh Gad; WB dated the movie for 2028. Additional titles in the works include the \u201cHot Wheels\u201d movie, \u201cThem!,\u201d and the animated feature \u201cEmily the Strange.\u201d On the TV side, Bad Robot is producing a U2 biographical scripted series at Netflix and Season 2 of \u201cPresumed Innocent\u201d at Apple TV. <\/p>\n

\n\tLast year, Bad Robot\u2019s games division also inked a deal with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) to produce and publish the studio\u2019s upcoming project, a four-player, cooperative shooter game.<\/p>\n

\n\tBad Robot also expanded into theater<\/a>, backing several successful stage productions, including \u201cSunset Blvd\u201d on Broadway, which won three of its seven Tony Award nominations, including best revival of a play, and the musical \u201c50 First Dates,\u201d as well as the play \u201cBarcelona,\u201d in London\u2019s West End.<\/p>\n
