{"id":510583,"date":"2026-04-03T10:23:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T10:23:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/510583\/"},"modified":"2026-04-03T10:23:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T10:23:07","slug":"ms-calls-for-crackdown-on-brazen-organised-aggressive-retail-crime-marks-spencer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/510583\/","title":{"rendered":"M&#038;S calls for crackdown on \u2018brazen, organised, aggressive\u2019 retail crime | Marks &#038; Spencer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Marks &amp; Spencer has called on the government and London\u2019s mayor to crack down on retail crime, saying it has become \u201cmore brazen, more organised and more aggressive\u201d, after reporting an increase in shoplifting and violence at its stores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The M&amp;S chief executive, Stuart Machin, has written to the home secretary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/shabana-mahmood\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shabana Mahmood<\/a>, and its retail director, Thinus Keeve, has written to the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, saying greater resources are needed for police to tackle the crime effectively and target repeat offenders and crime hotspots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn the past week alone we have had gangs forcing open locked cabinets and stripping shelves, two men brazenly emptying the shelves of steak and walking out, a large group of young people ransacking a store before assaulting a security guard, a colleague head- butted trying to defuse a situation and another hospitalised after having ammonia thrown in their face,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.marksandspencer.com\/newsroom\/blog\/retail-crime-chips-away-confidence-our-high-streets\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Keeve wrote on the M&amp;S website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt is worse in London, but it is happening across the country, and it is becoming routine, because it seems there are no consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Police responded to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2026\/apr\/01\/police-disorder-arrests-clapham-london\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reports of antisocial behaviour<\/a> involving a group of \u201cseveral hundred young people\u201d this week in Clapham, south London, as part of \u201clink-ups\u201d using social media apps, including TikTok and Snapchat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Keeve said there were about 5.5m incidents of shoplifting last year across the UK, excluding \u201cthe vast number that go unreported\u201d. \u201cEvery day, more than 1,600 retail workers face violence or abuse. This is not isolated. It is systemic and it is getting worse, not better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He added: \u201cWithout a government seriously cracking down on crime and a mayor that prioritises effective policing we are powerless. We need a stronger, faster and more consistent police response, using tools that already exist to target repeat offenders and crime hotspots. And we need far greater transparency on crime so the true scale and impact is understood and can be used to target resources.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe need to recognise this for what it is. A systemic issue. A growing issue. And one that demands a coordinated response across government, policing and industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">About 100 officers were called to Clapham High Street on Tuesday where young people were reported to be attempting to access shops and a restaurant. Fires were also lit on Clapham Common and fireworks set off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Six teenage girls were arrested after two separate incidents of antisocial behaviour \u201cfuelled by online trends\u201d, according to the Metropolitan police. Five people were assaulted, including four police officers. The Met said it expected more arrests would be made in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Khan has condemned the scenes in Clapham as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2026\/apr\/02\/sadiq-khan-warns-of-zero-tolerance-approach-towards-any-repeat-of-clapham-disorder\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cutterly unacceptable\u201d<\/a>. He said \u201cthe culprits will face the full force of the law\u201d and that police were working with social media companies to try to clamp down on \u201cviral online content which promotes violence and theft\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Adam Hawksbee, the head of external affairs at M&amp;S, told BBC Radio 4\u2019s Today programme: \u201cRetail crime has always been a challenge, but it does feel in the past weeks and months that the problem is getting worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Asked about the impact of shoplifting on staff, Hawksbee said it \u201cclearly has an impact\u201d, and that staff \u201cworried about coming into work, they might be nervous about the journey home, and that\u2019s not the position that we want our colleagues to be in\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Shoplifting offences increased in England and Wales in the year to September, but remained slightly below record levels seen in the 12 months to March 2025, the latest Office for National Statistics figures available show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There were 519,381 shoplifting offences in the year to September 2025, up 5% from 492,660 the previous year.
