As the conflict in the Middle East continues to send shockwaves through the global oil and natural gas supply chains, fuel prices at Greece\u2019s gas stations are reaching the boiling point.<\/p>\n

According to reports from the newspaper Ta Nea, Greece is currently ninth globally for the highest gasoline prices<\/a>. Within the Eurozone, the country ranks third, surpassed only by the Netherlands and Germany. A similar trend is observed for diesel prices, according to the report.<\/p>\n

The rise in prices comes as the Greek government faces mounting backlash over its reintroduced cap on profit margins in fuel<\/a>\u00a0sales, a measure retailers say does little to reduce pump prices while squeezing already narrow earnings.<\/p>\n

The role of taxation<\/p>\n

The phenomenon of high fuel prices is largely explained by the country\u2019s heavy tax burden. In Greece, gasoline prices are composed of three primary elements: the cost of crude oil and refined products, retail and distribution margins, and, most significantly, taxes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Excise Duty (EFK) and the 24% Value Added Tax (VAT) make up the majority of the final pump price. In practical terms, for every \u20ac1.85 ($2.14) the consumer pays, approximately \u20ac1.10 ($1.27) goes toward excise duty, and \u20ac0.35\u2013\u20ac0.40 ($0.40-$0.46) goes toward VAT. This means that taxes account for nearly 60% of the final retail cost.<\/p>\n

Regional fuel price disparities in Greece<\/p>\n

Beyond national averages, prices fluctuate significantly within Greece. These variations are primarily driven by geographical factors, as the added cost of transportation to remote regions pushes prices to extreme levels.<\/p>\n

The \u201ctop 3\u201d most expensive regions:<\/p>\n

Cyclades: The undisputed champion of high costs, with the average price of unleaded gasoline reaching \u20ac2.157 per liter (about $8.16 per gallon). Residents and visitors here pay the highest prices in the country\u2014roughly 11 cents above the national average.<\/p>\n

Dodecanese: The Dodecanese island complex follows closely in second place at \u20ac2.116 per liter ($8.01 per gallon), confirming that Greece\u2019s island regions bear the brunt of these price hikes.<\/p>\n

Heraklion: Crete rounds out the top three, with Heraklion recording an average price of \u20ac2.108 per liter ($7.98 per gallon), narrowly surpassing other traditionally expensive destinations like Corfu (\u20ac2.093\/L) and Chania (\u20ac2.094\/L).<\/p>\n

Conversely, drivers in the Chios region found the lowest prices nationwide at \u20ac2.014 per liter ($7.62 per gallon), followed by Xanthi at \u20ac2.025 per liter ($7.66 per gallon). The 14-cent discrepancy between the cheapest and most expensive regions is a significant burden when filling a standard tank.<\/p>\n

The European context<\/p>\n

Across Europe, fuel prices have risen significantly, though only a handful of countries have seen costs exceed \u20ac2 per liter ($7.57 per gallon). The highest prices remain concentrated in Northern and Western Europe.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands currently leads as the most expensive fuel market at approximately \u20ac2.17 per liter ($8.21 per gallon), followed by Germany and Denmark.
