We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Security guards in shops should carry pepper spray and truncheons to tackle rising retail crime, a supermarket boss has said.<\/p>\n<p>Lord Walker of Broxton, executive chairman of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/iceland\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iceland<\/a>, said that \u201cjust one incident of violence against my staff is too many\u201d as he pointed to the example of armed Spanish security guards, saying they \u201cdon\u2019t mess about\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/marks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marks<\/a> and Spencer\u2019s retail director, Thinus Keeve, claimed its customer-facing staff were being subjected to violence and abuse every day, and called for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/government\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Government<\/a> and the Mayor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/london\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London<\/a> to crack down on crime.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with The Times, Lord Walker, who is also the government\u2019s cost-of-living tsar, said he agreed with his fellow high street giant boss and said: \u201cWe call it shoplifting, which sounds like a cheeky bit of pilfering, but actually we should just call it out for what it is, which is violent crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all saw the footage of marauding gangs and security guards being beaten up. The violent nature of it in Clapham is horrific.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always argued for more powers for security guards. You go to Spain and all the security guards have pepper spray and a truncheon, they don\u2019t mess about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The M&amp;S executive spoke out after unrest earlier this week involving one of the retail giant\u2019s stores in Clapham, south London, which saw hundreds of youths swarm high street shops as part of an online trend.<\/p>\n<p>In a message on M&amp;S\u2019s website, Mr Keeve criticised the Government and Mayor of London Sir <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/sadiq-khan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sadiq Khan<\/a>, writing: \u201cWithout a Government seriously cracking down on crime and a Mayor that prioritises effective policing we are powerless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he has written to Sir Sadiq and M&amp;S chief executive Stuart Machin has written to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood calling for more to be done.<\/p>\n<p>A survey of 1,000 customer-facing workers in the UK by the Institute of Customer Service found around 43% of frontline staff had experienced hostility or abuse from customers in the past six months, up from 36% the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Institute chief executive Jo Causon said: \u201cThe shocking scenes in and around M&amp;S this week are yet another reminder that abuse, hostility and criminal behaviour towards frontline workers is far too common \u2014 and all too often goes unpunished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not isolated to one brand or one sector: it is part of a much wider trend across our high streets and communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor too many people working in customer-facing roles \u2014 whether in retail, hospitality, transport, or services \u2014 intimidation, threats and violence have become a grim part of the working day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The data, published in October last year, found 22% of workers within this group had faced threats of physical violence.<\/p>\n<p>The survey also found 40% of service workers viewed violence and abuse as \u201ctoo frequent\u201d to report, and 35% of staff experiencing aggression were considering leaving their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>The Crime and Policing Bill, once passed, will make the assault of a retail worker an offence.<\/p>\n<p>The Bill has cleared both the Commons and Lords, but is going through a \u201ctidying up process\u201d between the two Houses of Parliament, which must agree on a final draft for the statute books.<\/p>\n<p>Shoplifting offences increased in England and Wales in the year to September, but remained slightly below record levels seen in the 12 months to March 2025, the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures available show.<\/p>\n<p>There were 519,381 shoplifting offences in the year to September 2025, up 5% from 492,660 the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 530,439 offences were recorded in the year to March 2025.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Your support helps us to tell the story From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":512078,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[59,57,58,50,56,54,55],"class_list":{"0":"post-512077","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-united-kingdom","8":"tag-gb","9":"tag-great-britain","10":"tag-greatbritain","11":"tag-news","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom","14":"tag-unitedkingdom"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/512077","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=512077"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/512077\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/512078"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=512077"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=512077"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=512077"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
