\n The Sheffield natives were all professionals, with eldest Arthur the most celebrated, having played in four separate Ryder Cups for Great Britain just after World War II.\n<\/p>\n
\n Harold was in the middle, replacing Arthur as club professional at Dore and Totley in 1949, while qualifying for the 1956 Open Championship.\n<\/p>\n
\n But we want to focus on the youngest of the trio, Walter, who effectively counted Shipley as a second home.\n<\/p>\n
\n Incredibly, he spent nearly four decades as their club professional, not leaving his post until retiring in 1985 at the age of 68.\n<\/p>\n
\n He died in the town too, but not until 2012, at the grand old age of 95.\n<\/p>\n
\n Walter served Shipley Golf Club with great distinction, helping them win the Bradford Union\u2019s Team Championship 57 years ago yesterday for example.\n<\/p>\n
\n He also won the prestigious Bradford Open on three occasions, as well as the Yorkshire Open in 1956.\n<\/p>\n
\n But Walter was not just a great competitor at regional level.\n<\/p>\n
\n He secured his one and only professional win at the 1946 Midland Professional Championship, before arguably his most high-profile season three years later.\n<\/p>\n
\n Walter beat some incredible players at the 1949 Yorkshire Evening News Tournament, including future Open winner Roberto De Vicenzo and 1957 Ryder Cup winning captain Dai Rees, only to lose the final to Sam King.\n<\/p>\n
\n And while Walter played at 10 Open Championships, he only made the cut in 1949, coming 17th, after starting the final round just two shots off the lead.\n<\/p>\n
