Zara Larsson<\/a> has come out in defence of Chappell Roan<\/a>, saying her biggest critics are driven by sexism.<\/p>\n

In a new interview with The Guardian <\/a>shared yesterday (April 3), the \u2018Midnight Sun\u2019 singer came to her fellow pop star\u2019s defence, and said that she gets a disproportionate amount of hate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe more people hate her, the more I love her,\u201d Larsson said of Roan. \u201cI don\u2019t like how she\u2019s being treated at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen a woman has boundaries, I think people freak out,\u201d she continued. \u201cMen can do violent criminal things, and people applaud them, but when a woman says, \u2018Stop following me,\u2019 it\u2019s controversial? It\u2019s like, \u2018You guys just hate women, actually.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u2018Stateside<\/a>\u2018 artist was referring to the blowback Roan has faced after being vocally resolute about maintaining her boundaries. The former NME\u00a0Cover star<\/a>\u00a0has routinely called out disrespectful behaviour from fans and the music industry, once controversially\u00a0comparing fame to \u201can abusive ex-husband\u201d<\/a>\u00a0in 2024.<\/p>\n

She has also previously\u00a0shared her thoughts on \u201cweird\u201d and \u201ccreepy\u201d followers<\/a>, calling out the\u00a0\u201cpredatory behaviour\u201d of so-called \u201csuperfans\u201d<\/a>\u00a0that includes \u201cnonconsensual physical and social interactions\u201d, and also\u00a0hit back at photographers who yelled at her on the VMAs red carpet.<\/a><\/p>\n

For her part, Larsson said she enjoyed that element of fame, saying she thrived \u201con attention in all forms\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was younger, I was like: \u2018Oh, I can\u2019t wait till I have paparazzi outside my house,’\u201d she said, noting that fellow pop star Addison Rae similarly treats the attention economy as more of a game, and calls the paparazzi before heading to the petrol station. \u201cI think we both realise that life is a performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Larsson is also familiar with public backlash, and told the Guardian that after she\u2019d made a joke about abortion on TikTok in March<\/a>, a brand had revoked a multimillion-dollar sponsorship offer. \u201cI lost $3 million, which is the biggest brand deal I\u2019d been offered in my life,\u201d she said. \u201cI was genuinely like, \u2018OK, losers!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Her defence of Roan comes shortly after another period of backlash for the \u2018Pink Pony Club\u2019 singer following an incident between a security guard and the stepdaughter of footballer Jorginho.<\/p>\n

Late last month (March 22), the former Chelsea and Arsenal player accused a security guard of acting in an \u201caggressive\u201d manner towards his 11-year-old stepdaughter Ada Law \u2013 the daughter of actor Jude<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 during breakfast at a S\u00e3o Paulo hotel.<\/p>\n

Jorginho claimed that Ada, a big fan of Roan, \u201cwalked past the table\u201d when she saw the singer \u2013\u00a0who was in Brazil for Lollapalooza Brasil \u2013\u00a0at breakfast. He\u00a0alleged that a security guard went on to \u201cberate\u201d the family, leaving Ada in tears<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Roan addressed the claims<\/a>, saying that she \u201cdidn\u2019t even see\u201d the incident take place and that the security guard wasn\u2019t employed by her. And Catherine Harding, Jorginho\u2019s wife and Ada\u2019s mum,\u00a0also shared a statement<\/a>. She acknowledged Roan\u2019s claim that the guard wasn\u2019t her own security, but also said he wasn\u2019t a security guard of the hotel.<\/p>\n

Roan received plenty of backlash online and offline, with the mayor of Rio de Janeiro even banning her from one of the city\u2019s largest music events<\/a>.
