Very few in-flight issues have cropped up that could disrupt their peace of mind.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sv00013b6qj7giqr79@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Except, that is, for the toilet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sv00023b6qoembnrsl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Artemis II crew\u2019s 16.5-foot-wide (5-meter-wide) Orion capsule has a waste management-related problem that arose in the early hours of Saturday as Day 3 was winding down.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sv00033b6q8khe31v9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s an issue with dumping the waste out of the toilet,\u201d Artemis II Flight Director Judd Frieling told reporters Saturday morning. \u201cAnd so it appears to me that we probably have some frozen urine in the vent line.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sv00043b6q6qqfi84v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/27\/science\/nasa-artemis-2-astronauts-crew\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The astronauts<\/a> \u2014 NASA\u2019s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen \u2014 were still fast asleep by midmorning nearly 200,000 miles (nearly 320,000 kilometers) from Earth as mission controllers continued to troubleshoot the issue. And by 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday, early in Day 4 of the flight, mission controllers had a plan of attack: to warm up the frozen line by rotating the capsule to put the frozen urine into the sun. That unclogged the pipe, allowing the waste management system to expel the urine outside the capsule, potentially clearing the system to allow the astronauts to begin using the toilet again.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkqbho000063b6qg2eeimrj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shortly after the attempt to expel some of the urine, mission control said the toilet was \u201cgo\u201d \u2014 but \u201cfor fecal use only.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sv00053b6qduse81x0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The process of venting the urine outside the capsule was a moment Koch also showed on camera earlier in the mission. The pee trickles by like glowing gems in the vacuum of space as it zooms by the Orion\u2019s windows.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sv00073b6qcuy1pzkq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The crew also reported a burning smell coming from the bathroom, though mission controllers noted it was likely just the gasket material around the door.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sv00083b6qrt6yx1if@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But it\u2019s not the crew\u2019s first run-in with toilet troubles.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sv00093b6q18ewhgeu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shortly after launching to orbit from NASA Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Wednesday, the crew realized the toilet\u2019s pump wasn\u2019t working. Pumps are important and used for a variety of reasons, including assisting with pulling waste from the body. In space, there is no gravity to assist with such expulsions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sv000a3b6q15ztt88m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That problem had a relatively straightforward fix: The crewmembers simply hadn\u2019t put in enough water to prime the pump. After they topped that off, the system began functioning as intended.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sv000b3b6qtyj9pq4u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The astronauts celebrated that small victory on Thursday during a virtual interview with news media.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sv000c3b6qh9745bd2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m proud to call myself the space plumber,\u201d Koch said. \u201cWe were all breathing a sigh of relief when it turned out to be just fine. We did originally think that there could have been potentially something fouling up the motor.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sv000d3b6q68htpkju@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLuckily, we are all systems go,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/csa-orion-toilet-20260404201742013.jpg\" alt=\"The Artemis II astronauts\u2019 toilet separates urine for release into space and stores feces for disposal after their return to Earth. The crew trained on how to use the system using this mock-up at NASA\u2019s Johnson Space Center in Houston.\" class=\"image_medium__dam-img image_medium__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_medium__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1133\" width=\"850\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sw000f3b6qq3nnwlw1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The onboard toilet is perhaps the spaceflight amenity held most dear to astronauts who value creature comforts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sw000g3b6q4cibxn32@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI like to say that it is probably the most important piece of equipment on board,\u201d Koch added during her Thursday dispatch from Orion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sw000h3b6qzo75wlus@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With the Orion toilet malfunctioning, the astronauts are resorting to a technique employed by the deep-space explorers of the mid-20th century.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sw000i3b6qr99suafa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the Apollo era, astronauts did not have a toilet. They relied solely on bags to relieve themselves.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sw000j3b6qwzedc3yg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And the process was not always error-free. During the 1969 Apollo 10 mission \u2014 the one in which Thomas Stafford, John Young and Eugene Cernan circumnavigated the moon \u2014 Stafford reported back to mission control on Day 6 of the mission that a piece of waste was floating through the cabin, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hq.nasa.gov\/alsj\/a410\/AS10_CM.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">once-confidential government documents<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sw000k3b6q9r9rxwjn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cGive me a napkin, quick,\u201d Stafford was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/09\/25\/tech\/spacex-toilet-waste-management-system-scn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recorded<\/a> saying a few minutes before Cernan spots more: \u201cHere\u2019s another goddamn turd.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sw000l3b6qltxllwzg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The astronauts famously hated the bagged-poop approach.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sw000m3b6qr7tpjm98@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe fecal bag system was marginally functional and was described as very \u2018distasteful\u2019 by the crew,\u201d an <a href=\"https:\/\/ntrs.nasa.gov\/api\/citations\/20150018580\/downloads\/20150018580.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">official NASA report<\/a> from 2007 later revealed. \u201cThe bags provided no odor control in the small capsule and the odor was prominent.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkog11k00003b6qbt3egarn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Orion crew is relying on a similar system right now that\u2019s formally referred to as the the Collapsable Contingency Urinal or CCU. Astronaut Don Pettit, following along with the mission from home, shared an image on his social media feed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sx000o3b6qzfuvcou0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Apollo 10 capsule wasn\u2019t the only one plagued with toilet issues. The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, which notched its first astronaut mission in 2020 and has flown more than a dozen since, also had several hiccups with its hygiene system.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sx000p3b6q339mz1n8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During a Crew Dragon flight in 2021, for example, SpaceX found that a tube used to funnel urine into a storage tank became unglued, causing a leaky mess beneath the capsule\u2019s floor. That forced the astronauts to rely on backup undergarments \u2014 which are essentially adult diapers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sx000q3b6qcrqceoxt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The current NASA administrator, billionaire tech entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, also commissioned a three-day flight aboard Crew Dragon in 2022, called Inspiration4. During the spaceflight, he had to troubleshoot an onboard toilet problem. The issue, however, did not involve wayward waste floating around the cabin, Isaacman told CNN at the time.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sx000r3b6qpm7n0vxi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Decades of toilet development informed the system aboard Orion that the Artemis II astronauts are using. NASA put a similar system on board the International Space Station \u2014 which orbits just a couple hundred miles above Earth \u2014 to help vet the technology.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775335209_9_55187055368-7ab1e4c6a4-o.jpg\" alt=\"NASA astronaut Christina Koch reads on a tablet in the Orion crew capsule on Friday while astronaut Jeremy Hansen (center right) looks out of one of Orion\u2019s windows.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkmggjx001d3b6qhyhaomh1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Collins Aerospace holds a roughly $30 million contract, <a href=\"https:\/\/govtribe.com\/award\/federal-contract-award\/definitive-contract-nnh16co87c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">inked in 2015<\/a>, to design and adapt the technology, known as the Universal Waste Management System or UWMS, for Orion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sx000s3b6q795gd4fq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And the system also builds on decades of the Space Shuttle program\u2019s toilet technology. On both systems, urine is vented outside the capsule while solid waste is compacted and returned home with the crew.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sx000t3b6qhq0op6j1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When it functions, the in-space toilet can have its advantages.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sy000u3b6qrlp6e1fc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOne of my friends has even said he prefers the toilet in space to the one on Earth,\u201d former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnkm34sy000v3b6q1wu9ljgu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Massimino isn\u2019t so sure, however. \u201cI really miss my toilet on Earth because it\u2019s very involved in space, and you have to be careful and respect your friends so that you don\u2019t leave a mess,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd always clean up after yourself because you don\u2019t want people to get sick.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/editor-note\/instances\/cmnknwjik000n3b6qia2wb8qh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"editor-note\" class=\"editor-note-elevate vossi-editor-note_elevate inline-placeholder \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    NASA\u2019s Artemis program is sending humans into deep space for the first time in more than five decades.
