{"id":513234,"date":"2026-04-04T22:23:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-04T22:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/513234\/"},"modified":"2026-04-04T22:23:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-04T22:23:16","slug":"family-overwhelmed-with-love-and-support-after-death-of-schoolgirl-from-faversham-who-died-in-kent-meningitis-outbreak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/513234\/","title":{"rendered":"Family \u2018overwhelmed with love and support\u2019 after death of schoolgirl from Faversham who died in Kent meningitis outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The family of an 18-year-old girl who died during the Kent meningitis outbreak say they have been \u201coverwhelmed with love and support\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Juliette Kenny, a Year 13 pupil at Queen Elizabeth\u2019s Grammar School in Faversham, died on March 14 \u2013 less than 24 hours after first falling ill at her home.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 727 612\" alt=\"Juliette Kenny, 18, died during the meningitis outbreak in Kent\" data-root=\"\/_media\/img\/\" data-path=\"ZKL00BXSFD302HRBJJ3Y.jpg\" data-ar=\"1.19\"\/>Juliette Kenny, 18, died during the meningitis outbreak in Kent<\/p>\n<p>The schoolgirl, known as Lettie, died from meningitis B, a serious bacterial infection which can lead to meningitis and sepsis and can become life-threatening within hours.<\/p>\n<p>This week, her family described their heartbreak on a GoFundMe page set up in honour of her legacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been such a shock to us all and we have been overwhelmed with love and support from our family and friends,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you to all who have reached out to us, and thank you for keeping us in your thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thank Macknade Farm Shop and other groups for choosing Meningitis Research Foundation as one of their chosen charities to fundraise for this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 538 530\" alt=\"The Kenny Family (left to right): Juliette, Michael, Rebecca and Florence. Juliette is a force in this world,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith her beautifully positive energy she spread fun, love and happiness to those around her and she continues to do so now.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 1504 1200\" alt=\"A long queue for meningitis vaccines at the University of Kent amid the outbreak\" data-root=\"\/_media\/img\/\" data-path=\"SP74CTNMHMCDX60MD5VB.jpg\" data-ar=\"1.25\"\/>A long queue for meningitis vaccines at the University of Kent amid the outbreak<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe devastation of her loss to us, her family and friends is immeasurable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He described how the illness progressed rapidly, with Juliette first vomiting in the early hours of March 13.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were no other symptoms at this time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the morning on Friday, she was taken, by us, to our local emergency drop-in as a discolouration appeared on her cheeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was given antibiotics and sent by ambulance to A&amp;E.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJuliette fought bravely for hours, but despite the fantastic NHS hospital staff fighting alongside her, meningitis took her from us less than 12 hours later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were with her at the end, and the last sounds that she heard were the voices of those who loved her telling her how very much loved and cherished she is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Juliette died from meningitis B, a serious bacterial infection which can lead to meningitis and sepsis and can become life-threatening within hours.<\/p>\n<p>Her family say they were unaware that the MenB vaccine is not routinely available on the NHS for teenagers and young adults, despite being offered to babies.<\/p>\n<p>They are urging the government to extend access to the jab to older age groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo family should experience this pain and tragedy,\u201d Mr Kenny said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 5055 3184\" alt=\"A queue for treatment at the University of Kent amid a deadly outbreak of meningitis\" data-root=\"\/_media\/img\/\" data-path=\"HBNFD7WZ2M2QK9YO2934.jpg\" data-ar=\"1.59\"\/>A queue for treatment at the University of Kent amid a deadly outbreak of meningitis<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis can be avoided. There are young people currently battling this and young people still at risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJuliette\u2019s impact on this world must be lasting change. Now is the time to ensure families are safe from the impact of meningitis B.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting how rapidly the illness took hold, Mr Kenny noted his daughter had successfully completed a practical assessment for her PE A-level at Queen Elizabeth\u2019s just the day before she fell ill.<\/p>\n<p>Head teacher Amelia McIlroy previously described Juliette as an \u201cincredibly kind, thoughtful and intelligent\u201d pupil whose death has left the school \u201cdevastated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) says teenagers and young adults remain one of the key at-risk groups but face a \u201cclear protection gap\u201d unless they pay privately.<\/p>\n<p>The MenB jab was introduced on the NHS for babies in 2015, meaning the majority of young people born before then are not protected.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentonline.co.uk\/faversham\/news\/family-overwhelmed-with-love-and-support-after-death-of-sc-338660\/kentonline.co.uk\/canterbury\/news\/no-new-meningitis-cases-confirmed-as-12-000-vaccinated-so-fa-338088\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thousands of people were vaccinated<\/a> and given precautionary antibiotics in response to the situation, amid one of the largest public health responses Kent has seen in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Several infections were traced to three nights of partying in Club Chemistry, Canterbury, from March 5. The earliest victim fell ill on March 9, the most recent on March 16.<\/p>\n<p>At its peak, 34 were hospitalised with confirmed or suspected invasive meningococcal disease.
