The water was black and rising fast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She grabbed her two young sons and ran for higher ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">From the hillside, Salmawati watched as her home of 30 years vanished.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The children said, &#8216;Mum, the house is gone.&#8217; I was so heartbroken.&#8221;Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">What stood here before is now difficult to picture.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The villages of Sawang were once tranquil places, where families raised children, worked the land, and lived with the rhythm of their rivers.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Now much of it is gone, smashed, buried, or swept away.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-28\/rare-cyclone-south-east-asia-floods-disaster\/106076572\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Rare&#8217; cyclone thrashes South-East Asia<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The death toll is expected to continue rising after a &#8220;rare&#8221; tropical cyclone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In November 2025, a rare cyclone formed in the Malacca Strait, causing torrential rain to fall across large tracts of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-12-04\/why-is-indonesia-the-most-severly-affected-by-cyclone-senyar\/106095614\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106095614\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deluge triggered floods and landslides that tore through communities<\/a> in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">More than 1,200 people were killed in a matter of days. he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Houses were swept away and large logs came with the flood, crashing into homes and carrying them off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We don&#8217;t exactly know where the logs came from \u2026 there is a palm oil plantation upstream, it&#8217;s several thousand hectares.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A close up photo showing seas of timber in Gunci.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/7b1d10f90b302c684de4488cbec90450.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/> Gunci is one of many locations across North Aceh where seas of broken wood and timber were left behind after the floods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In nearby Babah Krueng village, Nur Aenun climbed onto the roof of her house with her elderly father as the water kept rising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In the early hours of the morning, she watched helplessly as the carnage unfolded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;With my own eyes I saw these massive logs rushing past right in front of my house,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;&#8221;And there was nothing I could do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Months later, the survivors are living in tents, nestled among the remains of their homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Babah Krueng&#8217;s community rice fields and gardens, that once stretched along the valley, have been destroyed, replaced by timber.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now all we see are mounds of earth, piles of mud, debris from the flood scattered everywhere, and huge logs that we don&#8217;t even know where they came from,&#8221;  Nur Aenun said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;People here are deeply saddened.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mysterious sea of logs hit &#8216;powerless communities&#8217; the hardest<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The flood was triggered by <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-28\/rare-cyclone-south-east-asia-floods-disaster\/106076572\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106076572\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extreme weather and torrential rain wrought by Cyclone Senyar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Climate change has been increasing the intensity of cyclones, but environmental groups, disaster officials and residents say another force made the storm far deadlier: deforestation.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The island of Sumatra \u2014 renowned for its mysterious, dense and expansive forests \u2014 has been stripped back over decades.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Piece by piece, year after year, the island&#8217;s forests are being cleared and replaced by extractive industries, such as palm oil, pulpwood and mining.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The toll is clearly visible from space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">These images show large parcels of forest in Geudumbak and Gunci \u2014 10 years ago versus today \u2014 that have been cleared.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Environmental monitor Nusantara Atlas estimates that in the last 25 years, almost 4.5 million hectares of forest in Sumatra has been lost \u2014 a land area four times larger than Greater Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Many companies have been carrying out significant land clearing legally, with government permits, but large swathes of land have also been illegally cleared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Muhadi Bukhari, director of the environmental NGO Bytra North Aceh, says his organisation has been sounding the alarm for years.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A truck balances on its side amid intense flash flooding.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/e5d8d366b88da05895be15556df844e5.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/> A truck stranded in the river at an area hit by deadly flash floods in November 2025 in West Sumatra.(Reuters: Willy Kurniawan)Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve long raised concerns about illegal activities inside Aceh&#8217;s forest areas,&#8221; It&#8217;s the powerless communities,&#8221;  Muhadi Bukhari said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Another Indonesian environmental NGO, Wahli, described the disaster not just as &#8220;nature&#8217;s fury&#8221; but one that was &#8220;amplified by decades of deforestation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mulyadi, from the district disaster mitigation agency Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB), said the presence of large logs in the floodwaters was clear evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We can&#8217;t ignore that deforestation is occurring in forest areas,&#8221; Information)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A recent report by environmental group Augira Nusantara said forest loss in Indonesia rose by 66 per cent last year, describing it as &#8220;truly distressing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A government state-owned enterprise is now the world&#8217;s largest palm oil company by plantation area owned, with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and his government eager to use palm oil as a biofuel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In the wake of the Iran war and the ensuing energy crisis, plans have been accelerated to roll out B50 fuel, made from 50 per cent palm oil-derived diesel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the toll that palm oil plantations have on deforestation has many across Indonesia worried.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Deforestation across Sumatra has been caused by companies operating with government permits, as well as illegal land clearing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a visit to the worst-struck areas, Mr Subianto said his government would &#8220;crack down hard on illegal logging&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">His government has said it will review logging licences and tighten restrictions on new land-clearing permits.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Prabowo meeting and greeting affected locals at a West Sumatran refugee post.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/13340984b7da429258fc5c8473b3036a.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/> President Prabowo visiting a refugee post in West Sumatra.(BPMI: Indonesian President&#8217;s Bureau of Press, Media &amp; Information)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Permits from more than two dozen companies have been revoked following an environmental audit and several companies are also facing legal action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">On paper, it is a significant response. On the ground, many remain sceptical.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We appreciate the central government&#8217;s response,&#8221; Muhadi Bukhari said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s a positive step.
