We might be living in the golden era of video game adaptations. It took studios a very long time to figure out that when you go from interactive to inactive mediums, you can’t just copy-paste and expect it to work. You don’t watch a movie or a TV show like you play a video game, and the adaptations that have failed to come to terms with that fact are the ones that have fallen straight on their faces.\u00a0Movie-wise, things have been looking up for a couple of years now, but\u00a0A Minecraft Movie\u00a0really set the world on fire, and\u00a0The Super Mario Bros. Movie joined the billion-dollar box office club, so it seems like things are beginning to come together.\u00a0The Super Mario Galaxy Movie might not be a critical success story, but it is doing well with its intended audience, and the early box office returns for its 5-day opening weekend are looking very promising.\u00a0However, one of the franchises that still hasn’t quite figured it out is\u00a0Resident Evil.\u00a0<\/p>\n

People have been trying to get\u00a0Resident Evil to work on the big screen for a very long time, and the last long series of films started off very different from the games and ended by going completely buckwild.\u00a0There have been other attempts since, but nothing that has come together.\u00a0People are excited, though, to see someone like\u00a0Zach Cregger take the reins.\u00a0Between\u00a0Barbarian\u00a0and\u00a0Weapons, he has a lot of horror goodwill right now, and that might be a good thing. In a long piece about Hollywood and video games in the New York Times<\/a>, Cregger was asked about his upcoming adaptation. While the article describes the movie as a film “that honored the franchise’s intense games, in which players must solve puzzles and survive a nightmarish zombie-infested setting with sparse resources.”<\/p>\n

This is where the banked goodwill might come into play because Cregger already knows his adaptation is going to piss off some fans, even going so far as to say they will “crucify” him for any chances he might make to the lore of\u00a0Resident Evil.\u00a0In many ways, the fans that Cregger is looking to appeal to mirror the world in\u00a0Resident Evil, which he is trying to tap into, if unintentionally and unnoticed by all involved.\u00a0“I love the idea of being pitted against a world that is hellbent on annihilating you,” Cregger said. “It just feels fun, and I haven’t seen a movie that offers that sort of experience.” Well, horror video games just had another swing and a miss with that\u00a0Silent Hill movie, so who knows what will happen with this one.<\/p>\n

How Many Resident Evil Adaptations Is Too Many Resident Evil Adaptations?<\/p>\n

It’s almost comical at this point how many times someone has tried to make a Resident Evil something happen, constantly reviving the corpse of this IP in movies, television, and even the game series again and again, trying to capture the couple of times everything has fallen perfectly into place. And that “couple” changes depending on which corner of the fandom you’re talking to, but the list is small, and you might be able to add the overall buckwild nature of the films to the list once they jumped the shark, but that was an accident.<\/p>\n

The last ones to attempt were Netflix and Sony, which tried the year before, both of which were failures from the top down. Before that, we had the six-film series from Paul W.S. Anderson, in which each new release was just Anderson reminding us how insanely hot and badass his wife is (we don’t blame him). In January<\/a>, it was announced that\u00a0Barbarian director\u00a0Zach Cregger will write and direct the film for Sony. Sources are still a little vague about what this movie will be about, but according to THR<\/a>, it ” is decidedly on the horror track. It is also said to have elements of a wilderness survival thriller.” So that’s fun.<\/p>\n
