His work with ships meant he had not been conscripted to fight in the First World War and his job took him all over the country.

The couple wed the following year in South Shields and after residing in Bristol briefly relocated to Swansea, initially staying in a guesthouse in the town before renting properties in Newton, Mumbles, and subsequently near Caswell Bay.

However, unbeknown to the young woman, her new husband already had a wife and child – and, remarkably, this other family lived nearby. Mr Shotton apparently split his time between his two families.

Based on Miss Stuart’s correspondence home to the northeast of England the marriage between the pair was not particularly content. There were accounts of regular disputes between the couple and the young dancer evidently wished to return to her career on the stage.

A letter from Mr Shotton to Miss Stuart, seemingly penned in the summer of 1919, alludes to the difficulties they were experiencing.

Letter from George Shotton to his wife Mamie written sometime after July 25, 1919

You ask to be free. Are you not more free that any other girl?

You wander to and fro at your own sweet will, no-one to question or prohibit you. Now you see that such is not what you ought to do.

I do not quite understand in what manner I could do more. It does not lie in my power. I have no intention of doing such awful things as you suggest.

I can only imagine you mean me to go on the wrong path so that you can divorce me. I will not believe that you have ever done anything that I could complain about.

I gave myself to you long ago. You never seemed to care after a few short weeks. I did my best for you. I gave you my name and my love, and you trifled with both.

In December of that year Miss Shotton, then 26, sent a telegram to her family back in Sunderland wishing them a Merry Christmas and proposing they visit her in Wales at some point. It was to be the final contact she would have with her parents.

When they responded to her at the Caswell address their letters were returned marked “house closed”. Yet it appears the police were not notified.

The following March staff at the Grosvenor Hotel in College Street, Swansea, decided to finally open an unclaimed trunk which had been abandoned at the establishment by a male guest the previous December. Inside the case were women’s clothing and shoes which had been sliced in half and a piece of paper bearing an address – the address of Miss Stuart’s parents.

Officers contacted the Wearside couple and they confirmed the items in the trunk belonged to their daughter. They informed police they had been unable to reach her for months.

Fearing the worst officers launched an investigation into her disappearance which included excavating the gardens of the rented cottage where she and Mr Shotton had last resided and searching the surrounding countryside. A description of the woman was circulated throughout the UK but their inquiries proved fruitless.

The case was also taken up by detectives from Scotland Yard.

Suspicion quickly fell on Miss Stuart’s husband – particularly when police discovered evidence he was already married when he wed the young dancer.

Mr Shotton was questioned by detectives and insisted Miss Stuart had walked out on him following a row. He acknowledged they had lived together but he denied ever marrying her.

Without a body or any forensic evidence he could not be charged over her disappearance.

Inspector Richard Tucker, pictured here in November 1961, led the initial investigation into the disappearance of Mamie Stuart (Image: Mirrorpix)

He was, though, charged with bigamy and in July 1920 stood trial at the Glamorgan Assizes sitting in Swansea. During the proceedings the prosecution summoned Mr Shotton’s first wife to give evidence that the pair had wed in 1905 but, unusually for a bigamy trial, the second wife could not be called as her location remained unknown.

However the court did hear testimony from the missing woman’s sister, Edith Brass, who said the couple had resided at her parents’ home during the summer of 1918 “as man and wife”.

Evidence was also presented regarding letters written by the accused in which he described Mamie as his wife. Additionally there was the marriage certificate bearing both parties’ signatures.

For his part Mr Shotton denied ever marrying Mamie, claiming she must have accompanied another man to the South Shields register office on her wedding day and persuaded him to forge his signature on the marriage certificate.

He did, however, acknowledge he had spent the wedding night with Miss Stuart in a South Shields hotel and had later lived with her at various addresses throughout the UK.

Perhaps predictably the defendant was found guilty of bigamy and was handed an 18-month sentence with hard labour.

The first Mrs Shotton’s thoughts on these events do not appear to have been documented but one can imagine what they might have been and the couple divorced shortly following his release from prison.

The tale of Mamie Stuart’s disappearance and her bigamist husband became major news across the nation. What had happened to the young woman? Over the subsequent few years there were numerous reported sightings of Miss Stuart in various locations including Canada, South Africa, Australia, and India.

A possible sighting of Mamie Stuart in India in 1923 made the front page of the Daily Mirror

The sighting in India was reported by Thomas James, the chief officer of a steamer named the Blythmoor that was docked in Karachi. The seaman, a friend of Miss Stuart’s father, claimed he had seen her as part of a group of travelling performers in the port town and had even spoken to her. However she denied being Mamie and quickly departed.

Mr Thomas asserted he “could not possibly be mistaken” about her identity. Yet nothing came of this sighting, nor from the others in Britain and abroad, and gradually the case receded from public attention.

That was until November 5, 1961.

On this day three young men from Bishopston – Graham Jones, John Gerke, and Colin MacNamara – decided to explore an old lead mine near Brandy Cove on Gower. The police interviewed her and were satisfied she could not assist their inquiry. She did inform them, however, that her first husband had possessed a violent temper.

A detective about to descend the shaft into the old Gower lead mine where where the skeleton was found(Image: Mirrorpix)

Meanwhile a pathologist determined the bones discovered in the mine were those of a woman in her 20s who was approximately 5ft 3in to 5ft 4in tall. The skeleton had been dismembered into several pieces – likely using a hacksaw with cuts through the spine, legs, and arms. The passage of time meant it was not possible to establish the cause of death.

The subsequent inquest, held in Gowerton over several days, heard testimony from more than 20 witnesses including relatives of Miss Stuart who confirmed that the rings discovered in the mine were hers.

Perhaps most remarkable of all was evidence provided by former Mumbles postman William Symons. He told the court how in December 1919 he had witnessed Shotton attempting to load a large sack into the back of a van outside the couple’s Caswell cottage. He even offered to assist the man with the heavy burden.

He told the inquest he had not reported the matter to the police when Miss Stuart subsequently vanished as he did not believe the two matters were connected. The coroner’s jury determined the skeleton was that of the missing woman, Miss Stuart, and that she had been murdered with her husband likely being the culprit.

With a body now in their possession could the police bring Shotton to justice?

Detectives initiated a manhunt and located him – in a cemetery in Bristol. It transpired that after serving his prison sentence and getting divorced Shotton had become a handyman, moving from location to location. He died in hospital at the age of 78, three years prior to the discovery in the Gower mine.

As for Mamie Stuart she had no final resting place for many years.

Mamie Stuart

In the years following the inquest her bones were stored at Cardiff University where renowned pathologist Bernard Knight would occasionally display them to students.

They subsequently disappeared from storage and their current location remained unknown for years but in 2020 she was at last laid to rest beside her parents in a Sunderland cemetery after her great-niece discovered the preceding year that her bones had been in storage.

Mamie Stewart’s body was discovered in a disused mine shaft more than 40 years after she disappeared.
