The decedents had gunshot wounds to the head, there was no sign of a struggle, and DNA on the weapons used belonged to the victims. This gave the incident the appearance of a suicide pact—a mutual agreement to end their lives together.

Security footage from the day before showed these men with Kalushev and two others—a young man and a teenage boy. They seemed to be bidding one another goodbye. Kalushev and the other two left in a camper van. Some reports say the footage showed the three remaining men entering the lodge and setting it on fire.

Police searched for Kalushev, the group’s founder. Six days later, they learned of his van parked on the side of a road 50 miles from the lodge. Kalushev, dead inside, had apparently shot the other two before killing himself. According to a report from the Ministry of the Interior, there had been allegations of sexual abuse in the group and the exploitation of minors.

Several theories have formed about what happened and why, but the linked suicide/homicide incidents loosely resemble what happened in the Order of the Solar Temple in 1994. In Quebec, a condominium fire attracted the fire brigade, who found five bodies inside. The building was owned by Jo Di Mambro, 69, founder and co-leader of the Solar Temple cult. The decedents had been members.

The next day, a fire broke out at a farmhouse in Cheiry, Switzerland. The farmer was found shot, with a plastic bag over his head. In another room, bedecked in crimson carpets and drapes, were 18 corpses clothed in ceremonial garb and arranged around an altar like spokes from the hub of a wheel. All were members of the Solar Temple, as were the 25 deceased victims found a hundred miles away in three adjacent ski chalets, rigged to burn. After the autopsies, a magistrate stated that 15 victims had clearly taken their own lives. The others had been killed, possibly willingly.

It seems that a fraud investigation had opened against the cult’s leaders, triggering their decision that it was time to meet spiritually on another planet. Fire would assist their transition. They’d prepared the members in advance with a suicide pact. Two linked incidents in 1995 and 1997 brought the death toll to 74.

Suicide Clusters vs. Cult Suicides: Why the Distinction Matters

These deaths are considered cult suicides, involving agreement and directives. This is different from a suicide cluster, a term reserved for copycat or contagion behavior that occurs when an initiating suicide triggers other vulnerable people to emulate it.

“Mass clusters” can occur as a widespread cultural response (e.g., a celebrity’s suicide), while “point” clusters are local. In the United States, about five percent of suicides occur as part of a cluster, mostly among teenagers and college students. There’s no pact, and often the replicators didn’t know the initiator.

The distinction is important because copycat clusters can be anticipated and prevented if communities take the right measures. Many of those drawn to repeat such acts don’t even know why, but their mental state and reaction to the initiating suicide can signal the need for intervention. In contrast, cult suicides or suicide pacts are mostly secret and are thus resistant to discovery before it’s too late.

In instances in which a suicide is heavily publicized, or teens are creating online shrines to deceased friends, their parents and teachers should be vigilant. Publicity appears to be highly influential.

One simulation study with 1,000 digital “residents” of a values-based community introduced celebrity suicides along with accompanying media coverage. The “citizens” showed a rate of suicide similar to that of actual societies. In contrast, restricted or muted media coverage via World Health guidelines appeared to help reduce copycat suicides.

There are other intervention methods as well—but the point here is to maintain clarity about the terminology. I’ve seen the Bulgaria incidents referred to as a cluster, but to me, the behavior looks more like a pact.

Clusters are community concerns, while cult-influenced pacts have a different dynamic that requires a distinct type of intervention: Surviving members might still be treated, but their ideological mindset requires experience with cult psychology.

On February 1, 2026, a man associated with Ivaylo Kalushev received a message from him: “Goodbye, friend, we…

[3
59,57,58,50,56,54,55
0":"post-516358","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-united-kingdom","8":"tag-gb","9":"tag-great-britain","10":"tag-greatbritain","11":"tag-news","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom","14":"tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
