A well-known children’s toy is being withdrawn from Smyths stores amid concerns it could contain asbestos.<\/p>\n
The high street retailer has issued a recall for a number of small archaeology and excavation kits<\/a>, advising customers to cease using them straight away.<\/p>\n A government alert has warned that the toys pose “a risk to health<\/a> ” as the sand contained within the kits may be “contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos”, reports the Mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n Product safety recall Smyths Toys Recalls Dig Products <\/p>\n The notice states: “Asbestos is a banned substance because it poses a risk to health even at low levels of exposure.”<\/p>\n The substance, previously commonly used for its heat and fire-resistant properties, is now recognised as extremely hazardous, with fibres capable of becoming permanently embedded in the lungs and causing conditions including asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer.<\/p>\n “The product has been recalled from end users by Smyths Toys,” the alert continues. “We recommend owners stop using this product immediately and keep it out of the reach of children.”<\/p>\n The recalled products are:<\/p>\n Dino Dig Sensory Bin – 248772<\/p>\n Dig In Kit GOLD – 231105<\/p>\n Let’s Dig Out Dinosaur Eggs (10pk) – 166403<\/p>\n Gem Dig Kit (12 Gem Pack) – 187539<\/p>\n Dig It Up Pirates 13 Treasure Set – 223521<\/p>\n Dig In Treasure Dig and Discover Play Gold Treasure Chest – 242645<\/p>\n Gem Dig Kit 8 Pack – 18753<\/p>\n Customers who have bought any of these toys are being told to “stop using the product immediately” and ensure it is kept “out of reach of children”. Shoppers may return any of the items to their local Smyths Toys Superstore to receive a complete refund at no cost.<\/p>\n Those who have already used the toy, or cannot access a Smyths outlet, are being instructed to dispose of the sand via their regular household waste, according to Teesside Live. If the sand remains in its original packaging, put it inside a heavy-duty plastic bag, seal it thoroughly with double tape, label it clearly and keep it in a safe place away from children.<\/p>\n If the sand has already been used, wipe down areas where the product was present using damp cloths to prevent dust from spreading. Wear gloves and a mask.
