\u2018Girls who don\u2019t have a bunda \u2013 what\u2019s the point? It\u2019d be like being with a boy.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018I just like a tight minge.\u2019<\/p>\n
These are just a\u202fhandful of charming one-liners<\/a>\u202ffrom Harrison Sullivan, alias HSTikkyTokky, who recently rocketed from streaming star to international infamy after appearing in Louis Theroux<\/a>\u2019s Netflix<\/a> documentary\u202fInside the Manosphere<\/a>.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n After sharing his somewhat contradictory and hypocritical views in the 90 minute film (as well as being scolded by his mother on camera), 24-year-old Sullivan has been on the receiving end of Instagram<\/a> pile-ons over the last month and mercilessly mocked online \u2013 and has since deleted numerous posts from his Instagram page.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n Some might say, this is the just desserts of a pound-shop Andrew Tate<\/a> who makes his money from espousing racist, misogynistic and homophobic views.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n However, HSTikkyTokky\u2019s humiliation across the world doesn\u2019t seem to have put off everyone. \u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n Following the success of the documentary, alongside Sullivan\u2019s older fans steeling their resolve in supporting the star, his freshly-raised profile now boasts a combined one million followers across his social media platforms, welcoming a new raft of followers impressed by his outlandish antics.\u00a0<\/p>\n \t\t Less than a month after his grilling from Theroux, fans have been feverishly clipping up his content and sharing it to other social media profiles, with currently over 300,000 tags for HSTikkyTokky on TikTok alone.\u00a0<\/p>\n Sullivan himself adds that he has enjoyed newer widespread notoriorty since the documentary<\/a> aired: \u2018What did I say? I was the main f**king character,\u2019 he said on a recent stream. \u2018You guys doubted me! Theroux knows who he needs to put in to get them hits.\u2019<\/p>\n Lee* is a 20-year-old student based in London. He has asked to go by a pseudonym as he\u2019s acutely aware that HSTikkyTokky content is controversial, and that publicly admitting he\u2019s a fan could lead to backlash, particularly in the wake of the Netflix documentary.\u00a0<\/p>\n The 20-year-old first came across HS TikkyTokky in 2021, amidst the ashes of the pandemic, when Sullivan was posting workout routines. It was only later that the influencer would move towards his more extreme content \u2013 with Lee and many others following.\u00a0<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018I think HS is really funny,\u2019 the student tells Metro. \u2018He\u2019s just a ragebaiter that says things to provoke a reaction. And it\u2019s obviously working, because the mainstream press won\u2019t stop talking about him.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018He just takes the piss and says things that many of us might think but never say out loud. It\u2019s just edgy boys chat on camera.\u2019<\/p>\n Lee explains that while other people might be apalled by Sullivan if they watched the documentary, he can relate to the influencer because he is young, laddish and unafraid to look stupid \u2013 it\u2019s also why he prefers him to other manosphere influencers, such as conspiracy theorist Sneako or the Tate brothers<\/a>s, whose content is increasingly nihilistic and angry.\u00a0<\/p>\n When asked why he believes this sliding scale of extreme content appeals to boys his age, Lee replies: \u2018The humour and how outrageous it is makes you want to watch \u2013 and then you end up watching more.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018And it\u2019s hard for boys to be real men. We keep hearing masculinity is toxic but, like\u2026 I want to be a provider. I want to have a good job and earn money. I want to be strong. We have so much pressure on us that women don\u2019t have.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018I think women do have it easier than men, in some ways.\u2019<\/p>\n Worryingly, Lee\u2019s response is not a particularly controversial take among those in his age group, with Gen Z showing less progressive values when compared to their older counterparts. A\u202fsurvey<\/a>\u202fof more than 24,000 people across 30 countries revealed 57% of Gen Z men\u202ffelt their nation<\/a>\u202fhad \u2018gone so far in promoting women\u2019s equality that we are discriminating against men.\u2019<\/p>\n \t\t Six in 10 Gen Z men also said they were being asked to do\u202ftoo much to support women<\/a>, with 28% adding that a father who stayed home to look after his children is less of a man than those who went to work.\u00a0<\/p>\n This may be why seemingly nice young boys like Lee are latching onto influencers like HSTikkyTokky \u2013 Sullivan\u2019s ability to play up to the camera, in addition to his lavish Dubai lifestyle, makes him seem like a powerful figure worthy of emulating.\u00a0<\/p>\n Seeing him on the documentary with Theroux only made Lee like Sullivan more, he says. \u2018I think he made Louis look silly when he brought up his views on Israel and his friendship with Jimmy Savile. He showed the hypocrisy. HS doesn\u2019t edit like a TV show, he puts it all for us to see.\u2019<\/p>\n Lee isn\u2019t strictly correct; in one particularly dark moment in Theroux\u2019s documentary<\/a>, Sullivan and his wider entourage become involved in a supposed child predator sting that goes awry, seeing one man get attacked. Sullivan removed the footage from his streaming platform, but it was clipped and reshared on other sites.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n Shortly after\u202fInside the Manosphere\u202fstreamed, Sullivan then appeared on Piers Morgan\u2019s YouTube show,\u202f Uncensored.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n The supposed debate quickly devolved into mud-slinging, seeing Morgan pull the interview when Sullivan made personal comments about the TV presenter\u2019s wife, Celia Walden.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n \t\t Again, Lee is quick to side with the influencer. \u2018HS shut down Piers nicely,\u2019 he says. \u2018It goes to show he\u2019s not stupid and isn\u2019t afraid to challenge the mainstream.\u2019<\/p>\n While the student mostly engages in TikTok clips and compilations of Sullivan, he has occasionally seen snippets of the influencer\u2019s livestreams on platforms such as Kick.<\/p>\n Viewers got a glimpse of these in\u202fInside the Manosphere, with Sullivan chanting \u2018f*** the Jews\u2019 and trying to get the phone numbers of women on the Marbella strip, referring to them as \u2018tarts\u2019.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n Other livestreams see Sullivan deliberately winding up women \u2013 insinuating they are sex workers by asking \u2018how much\u2019 or being derogatory<\/a> about their looks. On one occasion, he asks one woman whether her disabled child was \u2018leng\u2019 (attractive) in order to get a rise out of her.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n Lee acknowledges the content is not exactly \u2018woke\u2019 \u2013 but adds that\u2019s entirely the point. \u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018It\u2019s just banter,\u2019 he insists. \u2018He doesn\u2019t actually mean it. He\u2019s playing a character for the camera. Lots of people do that for a living \u2013 look at Borat.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018It\u2019s entertainment. HS never claimed to be a role model. If you look up to him, that\u2019s on you.\u2019<\/p>\n \t\t Sullivan himself suggests he\u2019s not responsible for his viewership nor is he a role model; as he told Theroux in the documentary, he\u2019s putting himself on camera for money and clout \u2013 with misogyny evidently a currency that pays handsomely<\/a>.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n However, what makes the influencer \u2013 and those like him \u2013 so troubling is the nature of the content and the audience hungrily gulping it down.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n Social media is the marketplace of the attention economy, with the algorithm rewarding content which exhibits more extreme behaviour. This, coupled with Sullivan\u2019s young fanbase (the average age of TikTok users in the UK is between 18 to 24, but many on the platform are younger) can mean damaging and worrying views \u2013 which even if said in jest, can infiltrate and fester in impressionable minds.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018Adolescence is a time of developing identity,\u2019 explains Dr Emily Crosby, child and educational psychologist. \u2018Due to changes in the brain, teenagers are more likely to be influenced by online peer groups and their peers even when consumed passively.\u202f These beliefs can become extremely entrenched that they feel like real life for these young boys<\/a>.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018Their brains are wired at this time to engage in risk-taking behaviours which a lot of this controversial content demonstrates. We also know that conformity is increased at this age where boys seek to find out social groups by engaging in similar behaviours.\u2019<\/p>\n Algorithms can also push more extreme content, with some of Sullivan\u2019s less offensive streams opening the floodgates to increasingly harmful diatribe<\/a>, including those of accused sex trafficker Andrew Tate, and conspiracy theories.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n Lee doesn\u2019t believe he\u2019s swallowed all of Sullivan\u2019s streamed beliefs, and insists he wouldn\u2019t speak to women and girls in the same way the content creator does for clicks as he \u2018has a sister\u2019 (Lee is, however, scathing about OnlyFans models, calling them \u2018desperate attention seekers\u2019 without a hint of irony).<\/p>\n The student also emphatically says he doesn\u2019t agree with the antisemitic or racist content that Sullivan has pushed.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n But Lee is no doubt right on one thing; Sullivan likely doesn\u2019t care that Theroux\u2019s documentary painted him in a poor light. Ultimately, all he wants is attention, as our views are his income.
