{"id":518015,"date":"2026-04-07T17:48:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T17:48:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/518015\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T17:48:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T17:48:08","slug":"report-losing-your-job-to-ai-doesnt-just-lead-to-unemployment-it-leaves-lasting-scars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/518015\/","title":{"rendered":"Report: Losing your job to AI doesn\u2019t just lead to unemployment, it leaves lasting scars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnohectb000x3j6r9ttqtfw6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/31\/business\/ai-jobs-big-tech\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI-driven job losses<\/a> may not just make it harder for affected workers to find employment in the short term but also could leave a yearslong \u201cscarring,\u201d marked by depressed income, delayed homeownership and even the lower probability of marriage, according to a new research report from Goldman Sachs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnnhla4400043j6ri7pt6one@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And those outcomes are even worse if they happen during a recession, Goldman Sachs economists wrote Monday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnoihwyu001j3j6rttkgs5mb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The latest analysis comes as economists, policymakers, academics and workers across industries are trying to assess how fast-rising artificial intelligence technologies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/29\/business\/video\/dario-amodei-ai-future-job-losses-anderson-cooper-digvid\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">could affect people<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/21\/economy\/women-employment-ai-disruption\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sectors<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/07\/world\/video\/samson-hu-asus-taiwan-ai-city-spc-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">societies<\/a> at large. Goldman Sachs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/insights\/articles\/how-will-ai-affect-the-us-labor-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">previously estimated<\/a> that 6% to 7% of US workers (about 11 million people) could have their jobs displaced by AI.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnoieq5w001h3j6r4itrz9zh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Monday\u2019s note explored the potential longer-run effects of AI-related job displacement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnoipz6i001m3j6rj27vy3bf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To do so, economists turned to the recent past: They identified occupations usurped by various technological innovations since 1980, and they then tracked the labor market outcomes of workers by applying data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/nls\/home.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Longitudinal Surveys<\/a>, a federal research effort to gather information at multiple times in people\u2019s lives.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnni9f6w000a3j6rie09b1nv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In doing so, the economists came to four conclusions:\n    <\/p>\n<p>            Short-run impacts: It can take one month longer for technology-displaced workers to find a new job; and their inflation-adjusted earnings take bigger hits (more than 3%) versus other workers (negligible effect).<\/p>\n<p>            Long-lasting impacts: 10 years after a job loss, technology-displaced workers\u2019 real earnings were 10 percentage points below that of non-displaced workers. Technology-displaced workers also had slower wealth accumulation, delayed homeownership and delayed household formation.<\/p>\n<p>            Varying impacts: The income hits are less severe for younger, college-educated and urban area residents; workers with shorter tenures and those who took advantage of retraining opportunities also fared better than others.<\/p>\n<p>            Recessions worsen outcomes: The effects of technology-related displacements are amplified (by three weeks of additional unemployment and a 5-percentage-point likelihood of subsequent joblessness).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnnia27l000c3j6r15h2ei58@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOverall, these patterns suggest that AI-driven displacement could impose lasting costs on affected workers, with substantially larger effects when job losses coincide with a recession,\u201d economists Pierfrancesco Mei and Jessica Rindels wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnoiyxch001t3j6rs0w0zlrt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, they noted, while a lot of attention has been focused on the potential negative impact that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/06\/business\/job-market-internships-squeeze\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI is having on new graduates<\/a>, past research shows that younger workers who switched jobs or upgraded their skills had better outcomes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnoj2su4001v3j6rvdkkce9v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mei and Rindels highlighted retraining programs as a potential solution in mitigating the negative effects of technology displacement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnoj4ly2001x3j6rq2zoc89y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cRetrained workers tend to move up the occupational ladder into roles with higher abstract content \u2013 positions requiring advanced skills and greater complementarity with information and communication technology \u2013 thereby reducing their exposure to future automation,\u201d they wrote.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"AI-driven job losses may not just make it harder for affected workers to find employment in the short&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":518016,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[20],"tags":[554,733,4308,86,56,54,55],"class_list":{"0":"post-518015","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-artificial-intelligence","8":"tag-ai","9":"tag-artificial-intelligence","10":"tag-artificialintelligence","11":"tag-technology","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom","14":"tag-unitedkingdom"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/518015","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=518015"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/518015\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/518016"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=518015"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=518015"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=518015"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
