{"id":518583,"date":"2026-04-08T00:33:22","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T00:33:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/518583\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T00:33:22","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T00:33:22","slug":"bradford-council-is-introducing-weekly-food-waste-bins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/518583\/","title":{"rendered":"Bradford Council is introducing weekly food waste bins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  The new service is part of a broader waste management policy update and is set to begin in September 2026 for all households.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Richard Galthen, head of fleet and waste at Bradford Council, said: &#8220;These policies will help us continue our journey to reduce waste, improve recycling rates and create a more sustainable district.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;All local authorities are required to make changes to meet national requirements.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;We hope residents understand this and continue to recycle and use the correct bins.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;More information will be provided about the new food waste collections once we have put everything in place.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Each household will receive a 27-litre food waste bin for outdoor use and a five-litre caddy for kitchen use.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The containers can be used for all types of food waste, including plate scrapings, unwrapped out-of-date food, tea bags, coffee grounds, pet food, peelings, eggshells, and both raw and cooked meat or fish, including bones.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The updated policy also clarifies existing services, including alternate weekly kerbside collections for general and recyclable waste, a four-weekly paid garden waste service, on-demand paid bulky waste collections, and trade waste services for businesses.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Support is also outlined for larger households and those in shared accommodation.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Households with seven or more people and houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) may be eligible for larger bins.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  There is also a separate policy in place for churches, religious groups, and other faith-based organisations.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The changes are driven by new national waste and recycling legislation.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The Simpler Recycling reform requires food waste collections to be rolled out during the 2026\/27 period.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Other regulatory changes include Extended Producer Responsibility legislation, which places greater emphasis on recycling, and national targets calling for a 65 per cent household recycling rate by 2035, as well as a 50 per cent reduction in household waste by 2042.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The council\u2019s updated waste management report will be presented to its executive committee on Tuesday, April 14.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Bradford Council currently collects more than 200,000 tonnes of waste each year across all services, including household waste, recycling, garden waste, bulky items, trade waste, and waste deposited at household recycling centres.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  More detailed information about the upcoming food waste collections will be shared with residents closer to the launch date.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The new service is part of a broader waste management policy update and is set to begin in&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":518584,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[1397,90,56,54,55],"class_list":{"0":"post-518583","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-environment","9":"tag-science","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom","12":"tag-unitedkingdom"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/518583","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=518583"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/518583\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/518584"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=518583"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=518583"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=518583"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
