Coming to Prime Video this month is “The Zone of Interest,” a gripping WWII drama that earned three Oscars at the 2024 Academy Awards, including Best International Feature Film and Best Sound. Known for its seriously unsettling storytelling and bleak visual style, Jonathan Glazer’s film unnerves audiences not through what’s shown, but through what is implied just beyond the frame. It’s already established itself as one of the most uncompromising and challenging historical dramas of recent memory.

“The Zone of Interest” follows Auschwitz concentration camp commandant Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller), and their children living in a comfortable house and garden immediately adjacent to the camp during World War II. While the family tends to domestic routines like gardening and playing, sounds and signs of the camp’s operations drift over their walls. The story observes their everyday life, the interactions with staff and neighbors, and the ordinary rhythms of home, with the grim reality unfolding just outside their door.
