{"id":519402,"date":"2026-04-08T11:18:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T11:18:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/519402\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T11:18:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T11:18:14","slug":"artemis-ii-crew-tears-up-over-suggestion-to-name-moon-crater-carroll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/519402\/","title":{"rendered":"Artemis II crew tears up over suggestion to name moon crater Carroll"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-testid=\"text-container\">While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebanner.com\/national\/artemis-ii-astronaut-moon-QSU3XCJCGZGU5POV2HFOIOXHA4\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thebanner.com\/national\/artemis-ii-astronaut-moon-QSU3XCJCGZGU5POV2HFOIOXHA4\/\">breaking the record for distance traveled by humans from Earth<\/a>, the Artemis II crew members remain focused on more personal matters in the names they\u2019ve recommended for craters.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"text-container\">They suggested one crater be named after their Orion spacecraft, Integrity. The other? Carroll, after the late wife of mission commander Reid Wiseman, who is  originally from Cockeysville. <\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"text-container\">\u201cA number of years ago, we started this journey in our close-knit astronaut family, and we lost a loved one. \u2026 Her name was Carroll,\u201d Mission Specialist Heremy Hansen said. \u201cIt\u2019s a bright spot on the moon, and we would like to call it Carroll.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"text-container\">Crew members teared up at Hansen\u2019s suggestion. They floated toward one another and embraced in the spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"text-container\">Carroll Wiseman was diagnosed with cancer soon after Reid Wiseman\u2019s first spaceflight. She battled the disease for five years before dying in May 2020 at age 46, a month before Reid Wiseman\u2019s mother, Judy,  died from Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"text-container\">A native of Virginia Beach, Carroll Wiseman worked at Children\u2019s Hospital of the King\u2019s Daughters in Virginia,  and as a school nurse in Patuxent River and later in Friendswood, Texas, according to her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilotonline.com\/obituaries\/carroll-taylor-wiseman-webster-tx\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pilotonline.com\/obituaries\/carroll-taylor-wiseman-webster-tx\/\">obituary<\/a> in The Virginian-Pilot.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/VLCVIIB2HVCY7H3BFFMEYSMMAE.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"text-container\">Carroll Wiseman \u201cdedicated her life to helping others as a newborn intensive care unit Registered Nurse,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/people\/reid-wiseman\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/people\/reid-wiseman\/\">NASA<\/a> said in a bio of her husband.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"text-container\">The two losses put death into perspective for Wiseman, who became a single father of two daughters, Ellie and Katherine, ahead of his return to flight in November 2022 and his current voyage around the moon.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"text-container\">\u201cI went on a walk with my kids, and I told them, \u2018Here\u2019s where the will is, here\u2019s where the trust documents are, and if anything happens to me, here\u2019s what\u2019s going to happen to you,\u2019\u201d Reid Wiseman, now 50, said at a NASA news conference in January. <\/p>\n<p>Artemis II Names New Moon Craters: Integrity and Carroll  (NASA)<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"text-container\">His daughters, now 17 and 20, and his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebanner.com\/community\/local-news\/reid-wiseman-father-nasa-artemis-moon-mission-UESFNTZLABBZZBESDKNWM3U63Y\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">83-year-old father<\/a>  watched him make history when the Artemis II crew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebanner.com\/community\/local-news\/artemis-ii-moon-launch-reid-weisman-5IO7KJNPPBCXLM6DULSZPZRNEM\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launched into space on April 1<\/a>. Now, their loved one could soon have a crater named in her honor.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"text-container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/planetarynames.wr.usgs.gov\/Page\/rules#naming-conventions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The International Astronomical Union<\/a> is responsible for naming planetary features. Representatives from the organization did not immediately respond to a request for comment. <\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"text-container\">\u201cLunar features are generally named after explorers, scientists, or [those] who have been deceased for three years but several features have also been officially named for the provisional names that astronauts designate during lunar exploration,\u201d a NASA spokesperson said in an email. \u201cOne example is Mount Marilyn, named for Jim Lovell\u2019s wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"text-container\">Lovell, an astronaut on the Apollo 8 and 13 missions, recorded a wake-up message for the current space crew before his death in August at age 97. \u201cWelcome to my old neighborhood,\u201d he said in a message played Monday.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"text-container\">Those in the command center on Earth offered a brief moment of silence and responded: \u201cIntegrity and Carroll Crater. Loud and clear.
