Dozens of jobs have been axed<\/a> at a longstanding Derby firm<\/a> after administrators were called in.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Reform Polythene Limited, an Alfreton Road-based manufacturer of polythene products, has confirmed the business formally ceased<\/a> trading on March 31, resulting in 46 employees being made redundant.<\/p>\n

Miles Needham and Andy John of business advisory firm FRP say the company had been operating with “limited financial headroom” for some time, which was “supported in part by a key customer relationship”.<\/p>\n

“Following a change in circumstances, this support was withdrawn, resulting in a rapid decline in the company\u2019s financial position,” the administrators said.<\/p>\n

“Following their appointment, [we] continued to trade the business for a short period of time to maximise realisations from outstanding debtor balances.<\/p>\n

“Despite these efforts, the business was not viable as a going concern and operations formally ceased on March 31.”<\/p>\n

The business had built a longstanding presence in the UK plastics manufacturing market, specialising in the production of flexible plastic packaging, including films, bags and sheeting, for a range of commercial and industrial customers across multiple sectors.<\/p>\n

The joint administrators added that they are supporting those affected with claims to the Redundancy Payments Service, adding that they are also focused on realising the company\u2019s remaining assets for the benefit of creditors.<\/p>\n

Miles Needham, of FRP, said: \u201cReform Polythene was an established manufacturer with a strong heritage in its sector.<\/p>\n

“However, the loss of support from a key customer ultimately left the business in an unsustainable position.<\/p>\n

\u201cFollowing our appointment, we continued to trade the business for a short period to maximise returns for creditors.<\/p>\n

“Regrettably, it was not possible to secure a future for the company and operations have now ceased.<\/p>\n

“Our immediate priority is to support employees through this difficult time and to realise value from the remaining assets in an orderly manner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Employees were told on March 6 that security measures had been put in place on-site, but that it was “nothing to be concerned about”.<\/p>\n

The company-wide email added: “There are some changes taking place and there will be updates to follow but for now please continue to work together professionally in the best interests of each other and the company.”<\/p>\n

Then, on March 19, another message was sent to employees confirming administrators were in control and that a review of the business model was taking place.<\/p>\n

The statement also added that 12 redundancies had been made in March, with the email reading: “[Administrators] have taken the initial difficult decision to make twelve redundancies tonight.<\/p>\n
