Sir Keir Starmer repeated that \u201cthe UK would not join the offensive action, would not get dragged into this war\u201d and that it was \u201cmonitoring\u201d how the US is using its UK bases<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Speaking on ITV\u2019s Talking Politics podcast he said the UK \u201cwould take action in collective self-defence of British lives, British interests and, of course, our allies here in the Gulf\u201d.<\/p>\n

Pressed to say how UK bases were being used, Sir Keir said: \u201cI\u2019m saying I\u2019ve been really clear about the use of the bases for collective self-defence only and we are monitoring.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister said: \u201cOur principles are in place, really clear about that divide \u2013 no offensive action, not joining in the war, of collective self-defence only and that our bases will not be and are not being used for wider offensive.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cFrom the get-go we\u2019ve been monitoring this situation, so I\u2019m pretty clear in my own mind about what we\u2019ve agreed and what the use of the bases are, and that is a really important point of principle because we have to learn the lessons of Iraq.<\/p>\n
