Despite the Endurace name, the bike borrows heavily from the Aeroad, a bike on which Mathieu van der Poel has won the last three editions of Paris-Roubaix.

The new Endurace CFR has the same geometry as the Aeroad and the Ultimate, but offers 35mm tyre clearance and the new Race bar lowers weight and reduces the bar height for added aero.

Canyon will sell the Endurace CFR in specs with SRAM Red AXS and Shimano Dura-Ace, both priced at €9,000.

Stiffer and racier

With Paris-Roubaix very much the focus, Canyon has concentrated on the new Endurace CFR, the bike on which van der Poel won the E3 Saxo Classic at the end of March, when the chasing group closed to within three seconds before letting him get away in the last kilometre.

Canyon says the new Endurace CFR is designed around the idea that ‘confidence and comfort on rough terrain reduces fatigue and unlocks more speed’.

But it’s not just about speed, according to Christoph Roodhoft, team manager at Van der Poel’s Alpecin-Premier Tech team: ‘The most important thing for us is reliability. The bike has to be fast. It has to be good. But we are asking people to take risks, so in the end it has to be reliable.’

The Endurace CFR shares the Sport Pro geometry of the Aeroad and Ultimate, rather than the more relaxed geometry typical of the Endurace.

The existing Pace cockpit is the standard option, as with the Aeroad. The height and width-adjustable bars allow riders to choose between Classic drops, flared Race drops or Compact drops.

But in addition, there’s a new Race bar, which has a fixed width and a V-shape that lowers the stack by 20mm and increases the reach by 10mm. Canyon says that the more aero ride position saves two watts at 45kmh and that it’s 120g lighter than the Pace bar, weighing 350g. When Canyon took the Race bar to the track for further testing, it claims that one test rider saved 25 watts when riding on the hoods.

The Race bar can be chosen as an upgrade via MyCanyon when purchasing the bike and is also available aftermarket. It’s compatible with the latest generation Aeroad and Ultimate too.

Stiffer than the Aeroad CFR and almost as aero

The Endurace CFR’s mix of Toray T1100 and T800 carbon fibre, along with the latest YS80 pitch-based fibre is claimed by Canyon to deliver a head tube that’s 10% stiffer than that of the Aeroad CFR. It says a fully built bike weighs 7.5kg.

Canyon has also toughened up the Endurace CFR’s hardware, with double sealed ceramic headset bearings and corrosion-resistant titanium bolts and claims it’s the most reliable race bike that will take to the Paris-Roubaix start line.

Aerodynamically, the Endurace CFR is claimed to be within a single watt of the Aeroad CFR at 45kmh, with a 205W normalised drag figure over +/-20° yaw angles.

There’s more tyre clearance than for the Aeroad though: 35mm instead of 32mm. Additional comfort over the cobbles comes from a newly developed VCLS Aero seatpost that Canyon claims offers more than 25% greater vertical compliance than a standard aero seatpost thanks to its design and carbon layup.

The Endurace CFR is also the first Canyon road bike where crank length has been shortened, with the size M specced with 165mm in place of the 172.5mm cranks usually found on this size bike.
