{"id":523581,"date":"2026-04-10T16:07:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T16:07:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/523581\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T16:07:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T16:07:14","slug":"ladybank-introduces-waiting-list-as-membership-nears-1000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/523581\/","title":{"rendered":"Ladybank introduces waiting list as membership nears 1,000"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Located 16 miles from the Home of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/sport\/golf\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Golf<\/a>,\u00a0Ladybank was founded in 1879 with the original course by Old Tom Morris designed in the traditional St Andrews fashion of &#8220;six out and six in&#8221;, with shared fairways and greens. Alterations were made the following year to provide a\u00a0&#8220;four\u00a0out and\u00a0five\u00a0in&#8221;\u00a0nine-hole course, and the conversion to a full 18 holes took place in 1962.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The track is no stranger to top-flight golf, and has been used seven times by the R&amp;A as a qualifying venue for The Open in St Andrews. With membership recently rising to nearly 1,000 playing golfers, the club introduced a waiting list ahead of the 2026 season.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Captain Colin Priestly says the club is benefitting from investments in recent years, while the initial response to a new marketing initiative aimed at overseas visitors has been &#8220;very encouraging&#8221;.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\" alt=\"Around the Greens logo\"\/>(Image: Damian Shields)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Your junior section has doubled during the past four years to more than 100 young golfers, and there&#8217;s also an interesting story behind your annual junior open competition?\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The history wall in the clubhouse entrance highlights the memorable, sun-kissed day in July\u00a01983, when the finest golfers of the era, Jack\u00a0Nicklaus\u00a0and Seve Ballesteros, played\u00a0an exhibition match which saw an estimated 5,000 spectators line the fairways.\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Before returning to St Andrews, both stars lingered to sign autographs and present prizes for\u00a0the junior open, which had taken place earlier in the day,\u00a0warranting\u00a0the honorary\u00a0membership accolade which was to come their way. The &#8220;Jack&#8221; and &#8220;Seve&#8221; trophies\u00a0are\u00a0competed\u00a0for to\u00a0this day at the annual junior open.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Seventeen other Major winners have graced the fairways, including Gary Player,\u00a0Peter Thompson, Paul Lawrie, Sandy Lyle, Bernhard\u00a0Langer\u00a0and Payne Stewart, who\u00a0progressed to the 1984 Open from\u00a0Ladybank.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\" alt=\"Jack Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros played at Ladybank in 1983 as part of an exhibition challenge match that had originally been planned for St Andrews to mark the opening of the Old Course Golf and Country Club.\"\/>Jack Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros at Ladybank in 1983 (Image: Supplied)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The\u00a0club has also hosted the Senior Open qualifying in 2018 and 2022, as well as\u00a0numerous\u00a0national and international amateur events. Notable past and present members include Ladies European Tour legend and Solheim Cup winning captain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/12217227.no-more-guessing-as-gamble-pays-off\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dale Reid<\/a>,\u00a0three-time Ryder\u00a0Cup player George Will, and current DP World Tour pro <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/sport\/25283201.connor-syme-targets-scottish-open-tour-breakthrough\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Connor Syme<\/a>, whose 2017 Walker\u00a0Cup bag and clubs are displayed in the clubhouse.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  What else should be know about the course?\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It&#8217;s a true heathland challenge with fairways lined by heather and mature native trees, including\u00a0pine, beech and silver birch. There is an abundance of wildlife throughout the estate, which is a conservation area\u00a0for the red squirrel, our\u00a0club emblem.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The 18-hole course measures\u00a06,821 yards\u00a0from the\u00a0championship tees, with a slope rating of 136 for gents and 149 for ladies.\u00a0It is\u00a0renowned for its links-like quality turf and the true and subtle, contoured greens.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A major renovation of the bunker complexes in recent years has improved the consistency\u00a0of play, along with the\u00a0introduction of several teasing new run-off areas.\u00a0Investment in a new\u00a0irrigation system has also helped\u00a0our\u00a0greenkeeping staff\u00a0maintain\u00a0the quality of the\u00a0playing surfaces.\n<\/p>\n<p>  The Herald Scottish Golf Survey is back in 2026 with some important changes we hope will be particularly useful. If your organisation has not received an invitation to take part, please contact kristy.dorsey@newsquest.co.uk.<\/p>\n<p>\n  In addition, new warm-up and short game practice facilities have delighted members and\u00a0visitors, along with a\u00a0nine-hole &#8220;Wee Course&#8221; which is ideal for junior golfers and those new to\u00a0the game.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Where do your visitors come from?\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  While\u00a0the majority are from the UK, this year many American and\u00a0European visitors are already booked in, thanks to targeted marketing and the support of\u00a0tour\u00a0operators encouraging golfers to broaden their horizons during trips to Scotland.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  This year,\u00a0Ladybank\u00a0has joined forces with our near\u00a0neighbours, Crail Golfing Society and\u00a0Lundin Golf Club to promote the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/25972238.new-links-history-golf-offer-launches-fife\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cLinks with History\u201d package<\/a>, building on more than 500\u00a0years of shared heritage under the\u00a0banner &#8211; \u201cOne\u00a0Pass. Three Courses. A Lifetime\u00a0Memory.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The\u00a0great value\u00a0\u00a3320 fee provides a passport to three rounds over a heathland gem and two\u00a0classic links courses.
