{"id":523618,"date":"2026-04-10T16:35:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T16:35:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/523618\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T16:35:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T16:35:08","slug":"irish-households-saved-average-of-e2bn-every-month-in-2025-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/523618\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish households saved average of \u20ac2bn every month in 2025 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish households saved an estimated \u20ac24 billion in 2025, according to new provisional figures from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-statistics-office\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-statistics-office\">Central Statistics Office (CSO)<\/a>, or an average of \u20ac2 billion per month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Overall, household total disposable income was at \u20ac185 billion, while consumer spending was \u20ac161 billion, leaving gross household savings of \u20ac24 billion, largely unchanged from 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As a result, the household saving rate was provisionally estimated at 13 per cent in 2025, down from 13.3 per cent in 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The CSO said the seasonally adjusted savings rate in the fourth quarter of last year was provisionally estimated at 10.9 per cent. This was the lowest rate in more than a decade, since a 10.7 per cent saving rate was recorded in the first quarter of 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe saving rate tends to be lower in the fourth quarter due to additional household spending at Christmas,\u201d the CSO said. \u201cDisposable income in this sector is also affected by tax payments for the self-employed, generally being paid in the fourth quarter. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Late last month, Minister for Finance Simon Harris unveiled details of a plan to encourage households to invest more of their savings, with money put into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2026\/02\/28\/simon-harris-cant-stop-announcing-his-new-investment-scheme-this-says-a-lot-about-him\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2026\/02\/28\/simon-harris-cant-stop-announcing-his-new-investment-scheme-this-says-a-lot-about-him\/\" target=\"_blank\">special savings scheme<\/a> set to attract a lower flat rate of tax \u2013 and avoiding taxation on capital gains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The proposal, which is expected to be unveiled in Budget 2027, is likely to be styled on a Swedish model, where the rate of tax is linked to the market rate \u2013 or yield \u2013 that applies to the Government\u2019s benchmark bonds.
