The Arenberg and the Carrefour get all the press, but there are no easy or inconsequential sectors at Paris-Roubaix. And even within individual sectors there’s much to prepare for. <\/p>\n
The riders tend to split their recon into two days. On Thursday, the harder sectors from north of the Arenberg to Roubaix itself. On Friday, an early set. They want to get a feel for the stones again but, realistically, they’re not memorizing the placement of literally thousands and thousands of rocks across nearly 55 kilometers of cobbles (almost 34 km for the women). They’re making a few mental notes \u2013 “this corner is particularly bad,” sort of thing. But the ones taking down all the detail are the directors in the car. They pass these notes to the riders in real time, as much as is possible in the chaos of Roubaix, over the team radios. <\/p>\n
Those notes are not exactly top-secret stuff, but are nonetheless guarded from open view. There’s a prevailing view within pro cycling that sharing less information with your rivals is better than sharing more. However, a brief chat with one team director on Friday got us a few tips; stuff he’d highlighted in his notes as key features to get to his riders over the radio. He asked that I keep him anonymous as he wasn’t cleared to share such info. <\/p>\n
Overall, conditions on the cobbles are good, if a bit dusty. There’s a chance of rain on Saturday, which would actually help. Provided it stops by mid-afternoon, the cobbles would have time to dry while the extra moisture would keep dust to a minimum. This might bum out the photographers, but the riders would certainly appreciate it. <\/p>\n

First blood. The road tips slightly downhill and the peloton hits these stones at speed, which means flats, crashes, and chaos before most fans have even found their spot on the roadside. The trough that runs through the sector collects whatever the surrounding farm fields choose to deposit \u2014 mud, mostly. Some riders won’t make it through. This year, those who do will have almost no time to breathe before sector 29 arrives.<\/p>\n
Director notes: The sector runs through a cutting between two fields. In a crosswind, that cutting creates a funnel effect that hits riders from an unexpected angle. Watch the wind direction on Sunday morning, if it’s coming from the southwest, the worst gusts will be about 800 meters in.<\/p>\n
