Heather Graham recently revealed how her high school classmates reacted after she landed a role in License to Drive at just 17 years old<\/p>\n

Now 56, the actress recalled being a \u201cnerdy\u201d teen despite playing a popular cheerleader in the comedy<\/p>\n

Graham later went on to star in Boogie Nights, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and more<\/p>\n

From teen comedies to cult classics, Heather Graham<\/a> has built a career defined by versatility and unexpected turns.<\/p>\n

While many audiences remember her for standout performances in Boogie Nights and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, her journey began much earlier.<\/p>\n

At just 17, she landed a key role in License to Drive, a coming-of-age comedy that introduced her to Hollywood. Reflecting on that moment decades later, Graham recently recalled how her high school classmates reacted after she was cast.<\/p>\n

\u201c[The movie] came out right as I was graduating,\u201d Graham told Jesse Tyler Ferguson on his Dinner’s On Me Podcast<\/a> on April 7. \u201cAnd I think people were like, ‘Oh, maybe we should have like, paid attention to her.’ \u201d<\/p>\n

During their conversation, Graham opened up about her teenage years, describing a version of herself far removed from the confident characters she would later portray.<\/p>\n

In 1988\u2019s License to Drive, she played Mercedes Lane, the effortlessly cool love interest \u2014 an ironic contrast to how she saw herself at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was nerdy\u2026you know, I was smart and I was just like, nobody thought I was that pretty,” Graham recalled. \u201cSo I got this job as like, the popular, pretty cheerleader, and I had very bad style and bad hair and makeup. Like I did not know how to like, you know, do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

That early role, however, set the stage for a career full of contrasts. In Boogie Nights, Graham took on the emotionally layered role of Rollergirl, a far cry from her teen comedy beginnings, while in Austin Powers, she leaned into comedy as Felicity Shagwell, a confident and playful spy. Each performance showcased a different side of her range.<\/p>\n

More recently, Graham has stepped into darker territory with They Will Kill You, a horror story centered on a hotel controlled by a satanic cult, alongside Zazie Beetz<\/a>, Patricia Arquette<\/a>, Tom Felton<\/a> and Myha’la.<\/a><\/p>\n

In a March 2026 interview with PEOPLE<\/a>, the 56-year-old actress recalled being “nervous” before filming due to her role\u2019s physically demanding nature.<\/p>\n

\u201cI trained every day. It was hard, you know? It was hard,\u201d Graham said, though she ultimately described the experience as \u201creally fun\u201d in the end.<\/p>\n
