\n Browns Golf, on Culver Parade in Sandown, has been a fixture on the Island since 1932 – the course was designed by champion golfer Sir Henry Cotton.\n<\/p>\n
\n The pavilion was used as a pumphouse in the covert Second World War Operation Pluto, helping to supply oil for Allied Forces in Normandy.\n<\/p>\n
\n Paul Saville, the operator of the course since July 2023, took it on because of the site’s importance, but also because of his personal connection to it.\n<\/p>\n
\n He said: “I love the history – that’s the reason why I took over. This is a significant place.\n<\/p>\n
\n “I have been playing here as a guest for 20 years. We would stay a week and spend probably four hours every day playing this course.”\n<\/p>\n
\n Since taking over, Paul has completed extensive works to the course and pavilion and the course now consistently attracts holidaymakers throughout the summer.\n<\/p>\n
\n Last year, Paul said the course had 10,000 people coming through the door.\n<\/p>\n
\n The venue, which boasts indoor and outdoor seating, has started hosting bingo, quiz nights and continues to put on live music.\n<\/p>\n
\n Browns Golf’s cafe serves food and drink and Paul has brought in a pool table to the area.\n<\/p>\n
\n Despite being a family attraction, Paul said the course still poses a challenge and is particularly unforgiving if the player doesn’t have a good short game.\n<\/p>\n
\n He said: “We had three professionals play this course last year – I would challenge any person to play it.\n<\/p>\n
\n He also cited the health benefits and mental health benefits of the sport and encouraged Islanders to come down and play.\n<\/p>\n
\n This year, Paul said he intends to host a few charity events and is looking forward to another summer season.\n<\/p>\n
