It was a great way for The Wire’s longest serving player to celebrate the two-year contract extension he signed on Tuesday.

But it was a contest his side did not have all their own way and they had to dig really deep to progress to their 14th Challenge Cup semi-final in 18 years.

Leigh opened the scoring through an Innes Senior try in the ninth minute.

Adam Cook stretched the lead to 6-0 with a penalty but Danny Walker finished off a nice switch of play to level matters with Marc Sneyd’s conversion.

It stayed that way until just after Josh Thewlis was sin-binned for slowing down a Leigh restart. Moments later Lachlan Lam scooted over but Gareth O’Brien missed the conversion attempt from close range.

Just before Thewlis returned, Williams sent King over to level matters and Sneyd’s succulent conversion from wide out sailed over to put The Wire ahead for the first time with 14 minutes remaining.

The game was sealed with Ben Currie’s two tries in five minutes, the first from a Sneyd grubber kick and the second straight from a Leigh short drop-out.

Sneyd rounded off the scoring with a penalty with the last kick of the game.
