Several local residents, passionate about protecting the natural environment, formed Plastic Free Exmouth as a small volunteer-led group with a clear aim: to make the town’s beaches cleaner, safer, and more sustainable for everyone. Their work has steadily grown into a well-supported community effort that turns a simple Sunday morning into something far more impactful.

This April, the group’s weekly Sunday beach cleans will continue to run from around 8.30am. Volunteers meet along the seafront before splitting into teams and working along key sections of the coastline, from Orcombe Point through to areas near the marina, collecting litter from the sand, promenade, and estuary edges.

Typically, around 40 volunteers take part each week, covering the beach in two directions from opposite ends. The focus is on removing everyday waste such as plastics, cigarette butts, glass, BBQ remnants, and abandoned clothing, all of which can quickly build up, particularly as visitor numbers increase.

One of the key strengths of Plastic Free Exmouth is its accessibility. There is no need to book, no prior experience is required, and equipment is usually provided on arrival. Families, walkers, students, and long-time residents all take part, creating a mixed group with a shared purpose. The atmosphere is informal and welcoming, with volunteers often working in small groups and chatting as they go.

After around an hour of collecting, everyone regroups to sort and record the waste. This step is an important part of the process, helping track pollution trends and raising awareness about the types of litter most commonly found along the coast.

The group also encourages simple everyday actions that can make a difference beyond organised clean-ups. With bins along the seafront sometimes overflowing during busy periods, especially in peak season, visitors are advised to take their rubbish home where possible to reduce pressure on local waste services and help prevent litter being blown back onto the beach.

Plastic Free Exmouth warmly welcomes anyone who wants to get involved.

Several local residents, passionate about protecting the natural environment, formed Plastic Free Exmouth as a small volunteer-led group…

[22
1397,90,56,54,55
post-527301","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-science","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
