The plants, which are grown legally by companies in Europe, South Africa, North America and Jersey, are typically more potent than street skunk.

Big Narstie’s website says that patients with conditions such as depression and anxiety may be eligible for such medicines, although the Royal College of Psychiatrists says there is insufficient evidence to support treating mental health conditions with cannabis. It warns that such treatments may worsen disorders such as depression and psychosis.

Dr Nayee, who trained at Cambridge University Medical School, said Integro does not routinely prescribe for mental health conditions and will not prescribe to anyone under the age of 21.

Big Narstie, who has spoken publicly about his criminal past, set up Big Narstie Medical in 2023, later incorporating his company, Big Narstie Medical Ltd, in the Isle of Man.

His website claims it is the “fastest way to get medical cannabis” with “100% legal next day delivery”. It features a video of Big Narstie on a visit to an overseas medical cannabis factory that legally grows 10,000 plants. During the video, he says: “I feel buzzing just standing here surrounded [by these plants] and breathing in.”

Elsewhere on his website the MC, who has also presented his own chat show on Channel 4, talks about his experience with medical cannabis.

Big Narstie smoking marijuana Alamy

He writes: “Coming from a Jamaican and Rastafarian heritage I’ve been privileged to know the power of plant as a medicine for my whole life.”

He explains that he set up Big Narstie Medical to “help people access medical cannabis and provide the best quality medicine available”.

“I was prescribed medical cannabis for neuropathic pain to the top of finger, sciatica and lower back pain. I’d tried multiple licensed pain medicines like pregabalin and tramadol to try and treat this but the side effects were unbearable and made me feel like my mind was floating and couldn’t s*** right.”

Big Narstie has 500,000 followers on Instagram and 250,000 on TikTok. The videos he posts to promote medical cannabis often use comedy to encourage sign-ups. In one he is seen singing opera to a warehouse of cannabis plants. In another, a young man wearing a fake comedy beard pretends to be his grandad and steals his cannabis medication.

A promotional video for Big Narstie Medical

Integro previously worked with Grow Pharma to launch the Grow Access Project, which offers discounted access to medical cannabis to university students as well as NHS staff and military veterans. The scheme cited “mental health issues among students” as justification. However, the clinic says it quickly terminated the relationship because the patients being referred did not meet its criteria for prescribing.

The company said its patients now came via self-referral, GPs and consultants.

Integro, which was judged to be a good clinic by the Care Quality Commission in 2023, also offers an international traveller service for overseas visitors to the UK, including delivering cannabis medication to hotel rooms.

Strict rules govern the advertising of prescription-only medicines. The Human Medicines Regulations 2012 prohibit direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription-only medicines. This prohibition covers celebrity and influencer endorsements, as well as social media content and brand partnerships.

Cannabis industry figures believe these rules do not apply to their promotions because they are marketing the services of the clinic rather than the products themselves.

However, campaigners are calling on regulators to examine the issue.

Alexander Robinson, founder of the Oliver’s Law campaign, which advocates for stricter regulation of medical cannabis, said: “Whether Big Narstie Medical’s Instagram activity constitutes advertising of a prescription medicine, rather than a clinical service, is precisely the kind of question the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, and other regulators should be answering publicly, and have not.”

He added: “I am not aware of any other prescription medicine in the UK being marketed in this way. Imagine if a celebrity endorsed the opioid pills that have been so problematic in America this way?”

The approach taken by Big Narstie Medical has raised concerns that the rules around medical cannabis are being exploited to create a “pseudo-recreational market”. There are also fears that young people with mental health conditions could be led towards potentially inappropriate medicines.

Robinson, who started his campaign after an inquest concluded that cannabis prescriptions contributed to the death of his brother, Oliver, said: “What concerns me most is who this marketing is specifically targeted at. Big Narstie Medical’s own website lists anxiety, depression and PTSD among the conditions it markets to. These are not niche clinical indications, they are among the most common mental health conditions in the UK, and the people who have them are, by definition, vulnerable.

“My brother had some of these conditions, as well as a documented history of psychosis. He was prescribed high-THC cannabis after a single video consultation [by a separate clinic], with no contact with his NHS psychiatrist.”

He added: “In my opinion, it is reprehensible and immoral to target vulnerable adults in this way. Oliver may have been the first, but without change to protect patients, he will not be the last.”

In a statement, Big Narstie said the naming of cannabis-based medicines reflected “internationally recognised strain identifiers used across regulated medical markets”.

He added: “These are standard industry terms which are labelled by the cultivators based on the genetics of the cultivar. So we do not have any say or influence on the naming process.”

The musician also denied promoting prescription-only medicines. He said: “Our communications are focused on improving awareness of legal access pathways for patients who have not found adequate relief through conventional treatments. We take care to ensure that our content is educational, balanced, and does not encourage inappropriate or unsafe use.”

He added: “We do not target young or vulnerable individuals, and any suggestion that we are promoting inappropriate access is not an accurate reflection.”

Dr Nayee said patients with severe or unstable mental health conditions were not eligible for appointments at Integro.

He added that Integro should not be held responsible for the activities of Big Narstie and that the Care Quality Commission had reviewed his clinic’s relationship with the rapper and had found no wrongdoing.

He said: “We have been extensively examined by the regulators who are reassured by our excellent clinical governance. I’m one of the leading medical cannabis doctors in the UK supported by my excellent clinical team of doctors and nurses.

“I have seen firsthand that whilst it is not a magic wand, cannabis can help transform the lives of some chronic pain patients for the better. No drug can ever be entirely safe, paracetamol overdoses kill more people than cannabis consumption ever will. I feel that medical cannabis is a tool that more doctors should at least consider. This is about clinical maturity and we should ensure our judgement is guided by balance and not bias.”

A popular grime MC is promoting medical cannabis to his followers on social media, having released his own…

[10
59,102,56,54,55
0":"post-527893","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-health","8":"tag-gb","9":"tag-health","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom","12":"tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
