The government set out details of the new quotas on <a href=\"https:\/\/links.us1.defend.egress.com\/Warning?crId=69d4d539065d6192eda3deaa&amp;Domain=politico.com&amp;Threat=eNpzrShJLcpLzAEADmkDRA%3D%3D&amp;Lang=en&amp;Base64Url=eNqNyksSQDAMANATpaELC7cpgup3mkTH7TmC1du8U6TyjNh7N0e5jQb8oJYTZcGqS_SrE18yowYGFqII0txGkMixNoK9lQQjXBofsIOdfscXXrMtBw%3D%3D&amp;@OriginalLink=www.gov.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">20 steel products<\/a>, which take effect on July 1, ahead of the April Easter holiday weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were assured that steel products not made in the UK would be excluded from quotas,\u201d Morley told Bryant in the letter dated April 9, calling the government\u2019s moves \u201creckless\u201d and arguing the new protections \u201ccould lead to critical material shortages for some industry sectors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the utmost respect, I don\u2019t think you will be in office when the long-term impact of this decision is played out and the devastating impact will be felt on steel importers, stockholders and downstream processors and manufacturers,\u201d Morley said. The CBM represents 200 firms that employ about 40,000 people in the U.K.<\/p>\n<p>The new quotas will lead to \u201cmuch higher costs for UK manufacturers,\u201d he added, with these potentially being passed on to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>As steel importers brace for the new measures, \u201cwe have companies saying their customers will now be importing finished goods directly, rather than buying processed or manufactured material in the UK,\u201d Morley warned.<\/p>\n<p>He fears that this \u201cwill start to kill off\u201d British firms that import and process steel to supply U.K. manufacturing, leading to job losses. \u201cAs lower cost imports are replaced with higher cost steel from UK producers.
