Discovery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe are deeply concerned by indications of support for this merger that prioritize the interests of a small group of powerful stakeholders over the broader public good,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/blockthemerger.com\/openletter\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/blockthemerger.com\/openletter\" target=\"_blank\">t<\/a>he letter, which was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/13\/business\/media\/hollywood-letter-opposing-paramount-warner-bros-deal.html?unlocked_article_code=1.alA.Ij8a.nqOUTOJLENoy&amp;smid=nytcore-ios-share\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/13\/business\/media\/hollywood-letter-opposing-paramount-warner-bros-deal.html?unlocked_article_code=1.alA.Ij8a.nqOUTOJLENoy&amp;smid=nytcore-ios-share\" target=\"_blank\">published Monday by the New York Times<\/a> and available <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/blockthemerger.com\/openletter\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/blockthemerger.com\/openletter\" target=\"_blank\">on the website BlocktheMerger.com<\/a>, states. \u201cThe integrity, independence, and diversity of our industry would be grievously compromised. Competition is essential for a healthy economy and a healthy democracy. So is thoughtful regulation and enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRun by CEO David Ellison, Paramount Skydance\u00a0announced its intended $111 billion acquisition of\u00a0the David Zaslav-led Warner Bros. Discovery in late February, following a battle with Netflix for the assets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIncluded in the \u201cfeatured signatories\u201d section in the new open letter opposing the deal, which was signed by more than 1,034 people at the time of publication, were: Adam McKay, Alan Cumming, Alyssa Milano, Boots Riley, Bryan Cranston, Cynthia Nixon, Damon Lindelof, David Fincher, Denis Villeneuve, Elliot Page, Glenn Close, Jane Fonda, JJ Abrams, Jason Bateman, John Leguizamo, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Margaret Cho, Mark Ruffalo, Noah Wyle, Patti Lupone, Ramy Youssef, Rosario Dawson, Rose O\u2019Donnell, Ted Danson, Tiffany Haddish, Tig Notaro, Yorgos Lanthimos and Yvette Nicole Brown, among others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRepresentatives for Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery did not immediately respond to request for comment Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWatchmen\u201d creator Lindelof, who is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/tv\/news\/damon-lindelof-the-chain-hbo-overall-deal-1236644602\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/tv\/news\/damon-lindelof-the-chain-hbo-overall-deal-1236644602\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">under an overall deal with Warner Bros. Discovery\u2019s HBO<\/a>, explained his reasoning for signing the letter <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DXEqnR2ESij\/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ%3D%3D\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DXEqnR2ESij\/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\">in an Instagram post Monday<\/a>, noting he does \u201csort of know my (potential ) new boss, David Ellison\u201d and calls him a \u201cbright, ambitious and passionate\u201d exec who \u201cloved movies and trusted the people he made them with.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLindelof says despite that impression he has of the Paramount CEO, and the concerns he and his peers have of potential retaliation in the industry, he chose to sign the open letter opposing the merger mainly in support of Hollywood\u2019s \u201cblue-collar town\u201d makeup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s thousands and thousands of Grips and Gaffers. Drivers and Decorators,\u201d Lindelof wrote. \u201cBuilders and Boom operators. Camera teams and Caterers.\u00a0And they\u2019re all about to get fucked. Hollywood mergers mean fewer movies and fewer TV shows and that means fewer jobs. When two storied backlots are owned by the same company, the outcome is intuitive \u2014one becomes a Ghost Town. I\u2019m scared. But I\u2019m not a ghost. And a fight is already lost if it\u2019s never fought. So I signed. Proudly. I understand why many of my peers have not \u2014 trust me, I\u2019m more of a puker than a stormer. But these boats are heading for the beach whether we like it or not\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRead the open letter in full below.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs filmmakers, documentarians, and professionals across the movie and television industry, we write to express our unequivocal opposition to the proposed Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThis transaction would further consolidate an already concentrated media landscape, reducing competition at a moment when our industries\u2014and the audiences we serve\u2014can least afford it. The result will be fewer opportunities for creators, fewer jobs across the production ecosystem, higher costs, and less choice for audiences in the United States and around the world. Alarmingly, this merger would reduce the number of major U.S. film studios to just four.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOur industry is already under severe strain, in large part due to prior waves of consolidation. We have witnessed a steep decline in the number of films produced and released, alongside a narrowing of the kinds of stories that are financed and distributed. Increasingly, a small number of powerful entities determine what gets made\u2014and on what terms\u2014leaving creators and independent businesses with fewer viable paths to sustain their work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMedia consolidation has accelerated the disappearance of the mid-budget film, the erosion of independent distribution, the collapse of the international sales market, the elimination of meaningful profit participation, and the weakening of screen credit integrity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTogether, these factors threaten the sustainability of the entire creative community. That includes endangering the professional lives of the tens of thousands of workers who help make up that community in predominantly small businesses and independent companies embedded in local economies and communities nationwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWe are deeply concerned by indications of support for this merger that prioritize the interests of a small group of powerful stakeholders over the broader public good. The integrity, independence, and diversity of our industry would be grievously compromised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCompetition is essential for a healthy economy and a healthy democracy. So is thoughtful regulation and enforcement. Media consolidation has already weakened one of America\u2019s most vital global industries\u2014one that has long shaped culture and connected people around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFortunately, someone is doing something about all this. California Attorney General Rob Bonta and his colleagues in other states are\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/20\/hollywood-workers-pin-hopes-on-rob-bonta-to-stop-paramount-deal-00837249\">reportedly<\/a>\u00a0scrutinizing the merger and considering legal action to block it.
