Matchroom CEO Frank Smith made clear that Whittaker\u2019s opponent, Braian Nahuel Suarez, had already been secured before the recent card reshuffle elevated the bout to main event status.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuarez had signed up to the fight. We just hadn\u2019t announced it yet,\u201d Smith said to October Red, dismissing suggestions that the matchup was a late adjustment following the cancellation of the original headline fight.<\/p>\n

The decision also ruled out speculation around a much tougher assignment, with Smith stating that moving Whittaker into that level of opposition now \u201cwould be stupid\u201d and \u201cdoesn\u2019t make any sense\u201d given his current position.<\/p>\n

Instead, Matchroom are treating the fight as part of a broader correction in Whittaker\u2019s progression. Smith acknowledged that the soon-to-be 29-year-old \u201chasn\u2019t had the right type of opponents to keep progressing,\u201d while reiterating the long-term goal: \u201cThe job we\u2019ve got to do with Ben Whittaker is build him into becoming a global superstar.\u201d<\/p>\n

With Beterbiev, Bivol, and Benavidez holding all the cards, there isn\u2019t much room at the top right now. Matchroom is likely killing time until those three move on or age out.<\/p>\n

By calling it a \u201ccontrolled rebuild,\u201d Frank Smith is essentially admitting that they aren\u2019t ready to find out how good Whittaker actually is. They\u2019d rather have a \u201cglobal superstar\u201d on paper than a world champion who might lose on his way up. A global superstar on paper is the boxing equivalent of a paper champion.<\/p>\n
